Hello There!! I have been working at a local WM on a part time bases. Yah... I'm not too crazy about Wal-Mart but the job is simple and there is not much that can go wrong...., In theory anyways. Here is the hick up. This is week 39 and the schedule for week 41 does not have my name on it. The manager on duty said that such errors happens from time to time and to work my normal hours. Is this something I should be concerned about? Does it mean that I have that ugly green sheet coming? In answering this question, please consider that I have been working in this store for only 6 weeks, no active couchings, nor have I been addressed on performance issues. Your input would be appreciated. Thanks, |

Hi Herbigharo32,
Your manager is correct that errors like that happens from time to time. In fact, it has happened to me once before. My manager had to hand write it on the board in red ink and I had to initial it to make sure. I've been at Walmart since March of 2006 and it's been pretty awesome, thus far. More than likely, you will not have that "ugly" green sheet coming to you. First, a Manager would have to give you a Verbal, then a Written, then a D-Day (Decision making Day) and then Termination. I might have left something out, not sure though. If you have no active coaching or been addressed on performance issues, I would have nothing to worry about as for the Green Sheet.
Now, I'm going to do a bit Vent here and it's not directed toward you in anyway. We had a new hire in our store about 2 1/2 weeks ago and said pretty much that he's not too keen about Walmart, that it's just a job and it's really easy. Walmart is NOT an easy company to work for, not by a long shot. For example, you might have to throw freight, take care of customers in your area, another area, help out up front running register, etc... It's not as easy as most people make it seem, especially since the Holiday season is creeping up kinda quick. I also told him that if you are not happy about Walmart, then find a job elsewhere, there are a lot of people out in society today that are looking for a job, especially since our Economy is not doing to hot. I also mentioned to him that you should be happy to have a job. It's what you make out of it. It could be a lot of fun. It could be extremely stressful. Or it could be a combination of both. Again, I'm not directing to you. |

Sorry I should not have said that. Working at WM, especially the location I choose is quite good. However, there is NO WAY I would work at the Irving or Fort Worth Wal-Mart. One thing people forget is there are over 4,200 store locations with 2,300,000 employees. Some WM's like the one I am at are quite good while others are stinky hell holes. In judging an entire company, one can not make an opinion based on experience at 1 store or even multiple stores. At the end of the day, I would consider 2 different Wal-Marts as being 2 different employers. In performance, I do as much as I can while working as efficiently and safely as possible. Since much time is spent moving VERY heavy freight, I do take into account as to how fast I SHOULD go rather than NEED to go. Afterall, I need to be healthy the next day, next week, next year, etc... When dealing with customers, I make them a priority, answer all questions, and fullfil requests as quickly as possible. If I need time to fill a request or get an answer, I tell them exactly how much time is needed. Working at WM is NOT hard. Believe me! This job is as hard as you want it to be. What I see is many folks creating really bad vibe with sensless gossip. So, I take short breaks and go home for lunch. Basically, there is always work to do. No shortage of stuff to do. No one will ever get everything done. No one has to tell me to go do "this" or "that" unless they want to. Often, I go in, work, help with the trucks, offer coworkers assistence, etc.. The go home. The hardest part about this job is when the week is over, I am bone cracken' tired. The one thing that could get me in a little trouble is the fact that on weekend evenings, I never get out on time thus causing me to have to trim my schedule by 10 min here and there through out the week when less busy. Management seems okay as they have not expressed desire in having me do time management differently. One complaint I hear both on the board and in the breakroom is the lack of recgonition from management. People, please understand that this guys and gals are constantly being pulled in 3 directions while dealing with crap all day. If you don't hear much from these people, that is mostly a good thing in my book. I find management in this store as being reasonable people. Like anywhere else, there are favorites. I am not one of them nor want to be. Since I normally don't take sides in the work place, I expect to be held to the same standards as everyone else :-) |

After starting to do schedules the last month, I can see where it could happen very easily... in our small area, our 7 associates are coded under 5 different levels.(which is stupid). At the most, there should be 3, mgr, tech and spec. My name appears on 4 of those 5 pages and the computer may schedule me on several, even tho it should be under mgr. I get so confused some days, I DO miss people and I only have 7. I can only imagine in bigger areas, like front end, where some are strictly cashier, some csm, people greeters, whatever.... and it gets NUTZ. Even tho the computer "is always right...not", it's still tough. I think even IT gets confused. lu |
