We were told by our Market Human Resources Manager that he'd prefer us not to hire seasonal help as it is a lose-lose situation for the store and that associate. We are hiring all permanent positions as far as I know. Currently they are getting me ready to orientate 25 cashiers, 7 apparel associates, 1 deli, and I know there were a few more... I'm going to have my hands full!!! |

we hire about 15 part timers a week, and lose about ten due to cut hours. It seems as though we have a new staff every month. They don't stay long enough to even learn thier names. |

Temportary help? We don't have enough "normal" help!!! We, too, are being pulled all over...it is a mess...and, our hours are being shortened again...at least for the next three weeks...of course, dept managers are still getting thier full hours...I questioned an asst and was told that, per HO, associates were the first to be cut...am I stupid? aren't dept managers associates" as well??? Sorry for the "gripe"... so many of us are getting so fed up with what is going on...Wal-Mart still doesn't understand that, even with a "weak" economy, if the stores are staffed, stocked and shiny (the 3 "S's"..customers will return 10-fold...might take a while until the word gets out, but, the advantages sure outweigh what is now occurring in all the stores..from reading this site I know that my store is not alone. Ladysassy...you have plenty of company....some times I think the Dallas meetings are " how to plot and destroy "whatever morale or commoradery,,you have left in the stores..seems to me that it always gets worse after the year end meetings..and maybe it is just me...but it seems as management is just as distressed as we are ... |

We have hired and orientated 20 people in the last 7 days and there's more to come. We have at least 50 requisitons open right now and a majority of those are for cashiers. DSM, do you have to do one giant orientation for all of those people? OHMY!! I'll be sending good thoughts your way! |

Goodness, no 1 big one, lol. I am up to 40 new associates that are going to be hired. I'm sticking to no more than 8. If management will not come in and help and do the talks that they are supposed to, then I will follow the orientation program and do it without them. If they want to help, then I'll take on more.
I am implementing the sponsor program with a "kick." Another manager in the area and I were talking and we are going to do teams with orientations. Each team (could be many teams depending on how many orientations.. say 20 people.... 4-5 teams of 4-5 people each) will be scheduled the same schedule (so all 4 people 8-5 same days, or 5pm-10pm same days depending on availabilities).
Maybe team green will do CBL's ALL day while team pink is given a list of items to find in the store. I take them to the register and we play in training mode. Then we go make keys, and go fishing, and mix paint, and learn site to store, and the sponsors do an activity or two, etc. Day 2 starts all over, this time pink is on CBL's all day, and green comes out in the store to play. We are coming up with an action plan and I'm excited. I'll be more in control of the training and I hope it sets the associates up better in terms of training and cross training.
I will be busyyyyyyyyy the next month for sure. I picked up a second job though so I've lost some of the flexibility in my schedule that I used to have. I'm not so sure it was a good idea, but financially I had to. My student loans aren't paying themselves (for the bachelors and masters degrees that I have but can't find a job for!) !!!!
The best of luck to you too! I'm sure you'll be busy as well! |

DS that sounds like a great idea. Sadly though at my store I can't recall when we hired for seasonal help last. |
