October 23rd, 2008 Remember when Walmart eliminated Layaway? Well K-Mart thinks the time is ripe for its return. See this ad Professor Elizabeth Warren discusses this change in marketing from the viewpoint of people not being able to tap into credit cards anymore at the TPMcafe blog. Posted by Robert Feinman This is a good read, click on the two links. |

Yes I remember layaway too. We still have customers asking if they can put it in layawy. My new store will be open for 2 years in January. We have the space for layaway, when our store was in the planning stages we still had layaway but by the time it was finished it was gone. We use it for site to store pickup. There is a credit card signature capture device back there. On the screen it says touch here for site to store pick up. Not many people that shop at my store know how to read they are always asking for someone to come to get their stuff. When I touch that device they say oh I did not see that. WTF I tell customers if you touch here it tells the CSS on the palm device there is someone for site to store and they will be right back. |

I would love to layaway come back. But I can't see it coming back, at least this year anyway. Maybe they can start an online layaway, where we can make paynents with a gift card or credit card, then have it sent to the store, or wherever. That would work as well, without having to have someone there(in layaway) or using storage space at the store. |

we have a BIG ass sign hanging from the ceiling
almost right in front of where they stand with an arrow pointing to the machine
that says to touch the screen for assistance and none of them do it...they will
just stand there like idiots waiting for someone to read their minds and show
up |

I remember Layaway being mentioned by many people as one of the few things that set Wal-Mart aside from Target. But once again, the Wal-Mart executives feel that copying Target is priority #1. I can not believe they got rid of Layaway in all stores. Yes, there were some that it should have been eliminated from (like mine) but at the same time, there were others, like one that I helped during a holiday season that had a Layaway line of about 30-40 people, that should have kept it. |
