Well I taught my first talking union course today. It went really well. For those of you who don't know Talking Union is a course put on by UFCW Canadas national office where we go into schools and basically enforce the importance of unionized jobs, as well as health & safety and labour laws. I think it helped to that the school my friend Kim and I did it at was my high school I went to, and the class we did it in was my grade 10, 11 and 12 teacher. Kim and I made a slide show from some strikes we have both been involved with as well as organizing drives. We also used personal storries where about health and safety as well as union organizing. We started off with introductions and then we did a handout which is called 'who belongs to a union in Manitoba' which is multiple choice and the kids had to decide who belongs to a union and who doesn't. Some were hard ones for the class. It was a grade 11 class. My organizing information was all about when I worked on the Lakeside Packers drive. Thank god we finally had a union in there. We even taught the kids a UFCW song called "Solidarity Forever" and showed a video that was made when we had our bbq in Brooks for the Lakeside workers.
Thanks Lies! I am becomming a shop steward in March. For those of you who don't know a shop steward is basically like a union rep but just deals with one store. We have union information kits for new hires, as well as handle grivences and answer any questions concerning the union that workers may have.
Sounds like fun. Will be a lot of work, but you will do just fine! Keep us informed. Really have learned a lot from you and i may get on your nerves with my e-mails of questions i ask, but i dont' mean to. Really am learning a lot!
Lies, Your not getting on my nerves with the emails. I'm glad to help in anyway I can. Keep me informed on your stuff and again I will help you in anyway I can.
