I just wonder how much money wal-mart gets ripped off cause people do this. We have people on our shift who will go back for lunch and go sit down still on the clock then after a half an hour go out punch out for an hour and punch back in. Taking and hour and a half lunch but getting paid for a 1/1 hour of it. They take 45 minutes breaks instead of 15 minutes. The guy who works with me in produce just the other day he leaves for his lunch at 1:45 doesn't come back up til 3:25. I take my lunch at 2:30 til 3 only take a 1/2 hour anyway he should have been punching back in same time or before I did and coming back up to work. Oh he punched back in alright then walked right back in the breakroon and sat down for another 1/2 hour. Ya know a person does that every night five nights a week every week every month just think of all the money that they are ripping off the company?? Why do they get away with it??? I don't think they should I think they should get fired isn't that in away shoplifting or something. I just can't believe what this company puts up with from employees. Like I said I came from Factory work background. That stuff would never happen there those people would be fired so fast their heads would spin. |

It's called stealing time and yes they can be fired for it. Have had several people fired for it at my store. |

well the guy that works with me already has had a D day for other things I told them about what he was doing for his lunches and all the assistant manager said was he talked to him about it. The guy is a total slacker he needs to be fired for many reasons but yet they won't finish it and get it over with and just get rid of him. |

the same thing goes on inour store. You don't have to take an hour lunch? We were told at our store that we HAD to take an hour lunch!! (store1378) Was under the impression that this was a WalMart policy.

overnights you can take either 1/2 hour or an hour but you are not to take and hour and half with being on the clock for a 1/2 hour. This same guy sometimes takes 3 break besides that. |

We have a group in our store, daytimes, that go on break for ever. Most of the time, management is sitting in ther BS'ing with them. That mgr will leave and another will come up and BS thru their break and leave. The original group will still be there. Management does nothing. Yet we had a girl on maintenance that took two afternoon breaks cuz she was tired and cranky and got fired. They didn't like her attitude! I've tried staying in there as long as that group does and my dept mgr always says.. How was your break? (I know he's being sarcastic) and I'll say Evidently not long enough, the oher table is still sitting there. So I thought I should too. MANAGEMENT ALWAYS HAS THEIR FAVORITES. lu |

cpklu, what's going on there is a touchy subject, and a little bit of a grey area, at that.
Wal-Mart's policy is actually if you're talking about work, you're not on break. So... if these managers are coming in and talking to these people taking long breaks, and discussing something work-related, break ends, and work begins. The question is whether they're talking about work, and whether the non-talking-about-work time adds up to 15 minutes. The unloaders at my store would quite often almost initiate work-talk with the managers, or hang out in front of the store and wish customers a good night like a greeter might, just to prolong their breaks. It's a bit of a loophole. |

I agree that walmart does have a policy that forbids managers from talking to you about work related stuff while your on break/lunch. We all know that does happen depending on the manager, or some managers dont' mean to, but they just are asking if so and so is here in whatever dept. or where are the keys, etc. To be fair there are many workers, and myself that have talked about work while on break or lunch with fellow workers. I do think the rule is in place though to keep managers from having you going to lunch/break and then talking to you the whole 15 minutes or 1 hour about work instead of allowing you to actually relax and you dont' feel like you can leave safely. |

In my state breaks really aren't required in many places. Very sad, but true. A fast-food place i worked at we did take breaks, because the owner umm.......was usually avoiding the police for one reason or another, LOL, so we did get breaks. Not saying he liked this though. A motel i worked at we did get a break/lunch that was paid for (for my position---desk clerk, but not for the housekeepers, maintenance, etc.). The sad part of this was that while i did get paid for my lunch/break i was required to work through it. The reason was that there is no one but you at the front desk on any shift and so if a guest needs a room they can't wait until your lunch is over to get a room, LOL. Kansas law didn't require them to give me a lunch/break though, and it didn't really bother me. Was a very easy job to do. I left, because of the mind games. Rules were in place a the motel, but the mgr. expected you to know that certain guests were excluded from these rules, and others were required to follow them or get specfic rooms, etc. Drove me crazy, but other than that was very easy job. most of my time i spent almost asleep, LOL> |
