Mike, thank you for the list!
Let me go through your list, to compare it to what I am personally doing...
As soon as I clock in, I am off doing my job. Don't visit, nor wandering/walking around without a purpose. I see a lot of that at my store too.
I do every job I can find to do, after my own tasks are completed.
I work at a exceptionally fast pace in my current position, though when I was working as an unloader I was told I needed to work with a sense of urgency. My wife and I were left scratching our heads--- so this is something I'd love to get your opinion on to clarify what they mean by a sense of urgency. I'm a fairly laid back guy, but I do everything I can possibly do as soon as possible.
I volunteered for the safety team for nearly 2 years, until I got moved in to do unloading. And then they already had someone on the safety team, though I volunteered, and they didn't have time to have any unloaders off for an hour for the weekly meeting. I was almost the only person in my store doing the walk throughs consistantly, making sure all the stations were stocked properly for the safety gear required. Since then, the SM decided to scale back the safety team and people were taken off the safety team so volunteering isn't much of an option. It may be with our new manager, will have to see.
As I posted before, I've had to call in about 3 times in the past three years. Once I had started throwing up at work, I believe it was mild heat stroke, and I went home because I felt like I was going to pass out. Once I had caught a cold virus in my eye and couldn't see out of my eye, and one other time for the flu where I was throwing up again. All were excused, and all were covered by my personal time. Never been spoken to about these absenses, though I imagine it would look better if I hadn't taken those days off anyway. But sometimes it is unavoidable.
Always take my breaks and meals on time. I even try to make sure to schedule my meal break to be sure that there is always someone covering my station.
Never stand by the clock waiting to punch out. There is always something to do. Usually zoning, or CBLs.
Also just to throw it out there, I have always been available when they have called me on one of my days off to fill in for someone in my department. I'm the first one they call. At one point, before I went to unloading, I was training all of then new cart guys and I was unofficially the person all the new cart guys were to report to. They even took my picture, and put it up as one of the department heads or some such thing. I'm not sure the exact title, but for a good month my picture was up (and no, it wasn't employee of the month, dang it!) before I was moved to unloading. I'm back on carts, because apparently I'm really fantastic and they only have three cart guys total now (including me), and the holiday rush would have found them with only two guys on the lot. I'm the only cart guy right now who is consistantly getting 40 hours, and I am apparently the most dependable cart guy they have (this is what my DM and other's have said).
I have had a list, in the past, of my duties as a cart guy. But I will go to my DM and ask for that list of duties again to be sure I'm fulfilling them to my best. Thank you for that tip, I'm sure it will help a lot.
I'm hoping to get moved back into the store in another department soon. As soon as they have a 40 hour position open for me, they said they would. They are expecting that the position should be overnights (which I have been pulling for), and they said it should be soon. But then again, I've heard that in the past... and was passed up when another person threw a fit, and walked off the job because he hadn't been moved in. I was upset that they decided to cater to him, and begged him to come back to work with the promise of being moved in within a few days. But that was under the first store manager I worked for, and that guy was not a good SM. I never complained though, I have always done my job with a smile even when I feel like I'm not always treated fairly (like that instance with my co-worker).
I'm the only one working in my family, so I need this job at Wal-Mart. And I really want to move up in the company, and make it my career. I really do try to work hard at my job, and do everything that is expected of me, and more. But like I said, last time I was up for review (my second anniversary with the company) I was told that no one was getting an exceeds. I really hope that has changed with the new manager, and I can at least aim for that goal.
