Just wondering how it works in other stores...Our store hardly ever gives a Exceeds..
They nit pick everything...I have been with Walmart 4 years now and got a Exceeds on every eval untill this last one..I know of three others that should have had a Exceeds and the AM tried to give it to them ...but the COM denied it ~

I've been at Walmart for over 15 years and have gotten an exceeds every year but one when my assistant was on vacation and someone i never even worked around wrote mine.
Exceeds means as soon as you clock in you are off doing your job, not visiting or walking around without a purpose. I see a lot of those in my store. It means doing a job without being told it needs to be done, working at a fast pace and with a sense of urgency.I volunteered for the Safety Team.  I have never had a call-in in over 10 years. Always taking the required breaks and meals on time. At the end of the day you shouldn't be standing by the time clock for the last ten minutes, I find little things to do to make myself productive until my time is up. You can get the list of job duties for your particular job that they use to do the evaluation and see that you try to do all that is required. They always try to find something that you can improve upon on the list so you always have something to improve on for next time.

Mike, thank you for the list!

Let me go through your list, to compare it to what I am personally doing...
As soon as I clock in, I am off doing my job.  Don't visit, nor wandering/walking around without a purpose.  I see a lot of that at my store too.

I do every job I can find to do, after my own tasks are completed.

I work at a exceptionally fast pace in my current position, though when I was working as an unloader I was told I needed to work with a sense of urgency.  My wife and I were left scratching our heads--- so this is something I'd love to get your opinion on to clarify what they mean by a sense of urgency.  I'm a fairly laid back guy, but I do everything I can possibly do as soon as possible.

I volunteered for the safety team for nearly 2 years, until I got moved in to do unloading.  And then they already had someone on the safety team, though I volunteered, and they didn't have time to have any unloaders off for an hour for the weekly meeting. I was almost the only person in my store doing the walk throughs consistantly, making sure all the stations were stocked properly for the safety gear required.  Since then, the SM decided to scale back the safety team and people were taken off the safety team so volunteering isn't much of an option.  It may be with our new manager, will have to see.

As I posted before, I've had to call in about 3 times in the past three years.  Once I had started throwing up at work, I believe it was mild heat stroke, and I went home because I felt like I was going to pass out.  Once I had caught a cold virus in my eye and couldn't see out of my eye, and one other time for the flu where I was throwing up again.  All were excused, and all were covered by my personal time.  Never been spoken to about these absenses, though I imagine it would look better if I hadn't taken those days off anyway.  But sometimes it is unavoidable.

Always take my breaks and meals on time.  I even try to make sure to schedule my meal break to be sure that there is always someone covering my station.

Never stand by the clock waiting to punch out.  There is always something to do.  Usually zoning, or CBLs.

Also just to throw it out there, I have always been available when they have called me on one of my days off to fill in for someone in my department.  I'm the first one they call.   At one point, before I went to unloading, I was training all of then new cart guys and I was unofficially the person all the new cart guys were to report to.  They even took my picture, and put it up as one of the department heads or some such thing.  I'm not sure the exact title, but for a good month my picture was up (and no, it wasn't employee of the month, dang it!) before I was moved to unloading.  I'm back on carts, because apparently I'm really fantastic and they only have three cart guys total now (including me), and the holiday rush would have found them with only two guys on the lot.  I'm the only cart guy right now who is consistantly getting 40 hours, and I am apparently the most dependable cart guy they have (this is what my DM and other's have said).

I have had a list, in the past, of my duties as a cart guy.  But I will go to my DM and ask for that list of duties again to be sure I'm fulfilling them to my best.  Thank you for that tip, I'm sure it will help a lot.

I'm hoping to get moved back into the store in another department soon.  As soon as they have a 40 hour position open for me, they said they would.  They are expecting that the position should be overnights (which I have been pulling for), and they said it should be soon.  But then again, I've heard that in the past... and was passed up when another person threw a fit, and walked off the job because he hadn't been moved in.  I was upset that they decided to cater to him, and begged him to come back to work with the promise of being moved in within a few days.  But that was under the first store manager I worked for, and that guy was not a good SM.  I never complained though, I have always done my job with a smile even when I feel like I'm not always treated fairly (like that instance with my co-worker).

I'm the only one working in my family, so I need this job at Wal-Mart.  And I really want to move up in the company, and make it my career.  I really do try to work hard at my job, and do everything that is expected of me, and more.  But like I said, last time I was up for review (my second anniversary with the company) I was told that no one was getting an exceeds.  I really hope that has changed with the new manager, and I can at least aim for that goal.

Labratio,a sense of urgency in my book means if you are asked to do something, you stop what you are doing and do what was asked of you. Some people like to finish what they are doing before moving on.I find that especialy if a Co-manager asks for something they mean now not by the end of the day.

when home office took away the hourlies giving them, I was still asked to write them, but the asst gives them...of course they don't give it the same way I would have...I don't mind writing them, because at least I know the people I work with and feel they get better feedback, than if it was written by someone who really doesn't know them from the next person

"Sense of urgency" seems to be a retail term, where I work, it's sort of defined as how devoted you are to getting a task done. They don't like the "it'll get done when it gets done" attitude, having a sense of urgency means you care about the job you are doing and want to get it done right and fast.

To be honest i think exceeds should be eliminated, because its not done fairly.

I get exceeds, but still it needs to be eliminated.

Recently had my eval, and wasn't sure how it would go since I had stepped down from CSM to garden center cashier, but it went fine, and I was given an exceeds from the Assistant Mgr over the front end.  He stated that he hoped I would come back to a supervisory role in the future, but I am truly happy where I am now.  I actually like Walmart again!!

glad you got one. Sadly it normally is nto given out fairly, and if they aren't going to do it right, then there is no need for it.

just my opinion...........meets means you are doing your job, not wasting time, working with the proper sense of urgency (isn't everything at walmart urgent?? lol)
exceeds means you not only do that, but can be counted on in a crisis (power failure, code white, etc) and know what to do in those situations without being told, see things that need to be done and do them or let someone know that they need to be taken care of, offer ideas and suggestions, give credit where credit is due, accept your co-workers even if you don't care for them personally.............going above and beyond.

I agree with you in the pefect world that is how it should be done, but sadly its not.

If they won't eliminate the plan as you mentioned by the book, then there is no need for it, unless they are trying to upset people.

I have gotten exceeds, so I'm not someone who is upset that i didn't get one, but rather i can honestly say its not always done.

Example: Let says Joe comes in everday and stands around management even has to get onto them to do something. They go and do it but take thier sweet time.
Then on the otehr side we have Pete who comes in and does what needs to be done, helps out his neighbors, customers come seek the person out for his great skills, etc.

When it comes to evaluation time though management gives both a meets expectation, because Joe does do what management asks of him, even though he doesn't take it upon himself. Its noted on his evaluation, but he still gets a meets. Pete gets a meets as well. So the incitative for Pete just went down.

Just for the record, I always work as if whatever I'm doing or told to do needs to be done NOW.

Now, when I'm told to do two things at once, it gets a little complicated, but I do my absolute best to jump through all the hoops to get everything done.  So.. I don't know why they would say I need to work with more sense of urgency,  Oh well.
