Eleven apostles sail up the humber

in a small boat

heavy men in beards

and barely afloat

 

I counted them off the boat

eleven men in a row

I asked where they came from

They said they didn't know

 

I fed them with pizza

and a tub of ice-cream

they took out their bibles

which I hadn't seen

 

They read aloud in turn

from the gospel of St. John

a crowd gathered to listen

some broke into song

 

The Ship Song they sang

written by Nick Cave

I tried in vain to stop them

they told me to behave

 

The commotion  led to arrests

the apostles were hand-cuffed away

but managed to wave goodbye to me

and shouted - have a nice day

 

Waves of police siren

washed over me

the apostles were gone

and I went home to tea.
