Lost in the dark with no one around,
I listen to those oh to familiar sounds,
My tears which fall from my eyes like rain droplets from the sky.
My hearts broken crys,
A lonely heart,
And a mind which shoits it's falling apart.
No one to turn to their all busy with their own lives,
Beisdes who can help a teenager?
With all their hormones and confused state of mind,
There's no wonder so many of us choose suicide.....

I wrote this when I was 16, I was being bullied, and suffering from serious depression where a number of times I thought about taking my own life. But whenever I told an adult I was depressed they laughed n said "How can you be depressed? You're 16 and have barely lived life!" I thought this a very closed minded response and very hurtful. Teenagers are a big percentage of the amount of people that commit suicide in a year, one of these reasons is the fact that no one takes us seriously when we say we are depressed.

I would love your views on this poem and what it means. Thank you x

Oh Toni,I was also bullied at school, but it started much earlier than teens for me, but I do remember when my Mother complained and visited the school...she was informed I was an unsociable child. Simply by the observation that I did not actually play away from the shelter in the playground as others did. (and others made life difficult, funny how the numbers to one, makes the one the definate catalyst, but not the victim) That was in the 50s, but I know there is still a lack of understanding what a bullied child or teenager endures emotionally. I was a teenager once and I also remember thinking the world was an alian place, like we spoke different languages. lol, But, it does get better as you grow in to it and have a voice of more authority.

You write with a great social conscience, Toni, it is the most frustrating time of our lives, especially if noone seems to realise how we felt at that time, well written, Zydha

I don't think anyone can ever under estimate how a teenager feels - I remember being terribly depressed as a teenager.  I think people are getting more aware, but there is still a long way to go - you only have to look at the statistics to see.  Bullying is insidious and does so much damage on a young persons psyche, and yet it still goes on.  A good poem, which I have much sympathy with

Thank you very much Emma and Zydha. I was very un happy during some of my younger teenage years due to being bullied and mis understood etc, but now I am very strong young lady and will continue to grow as I get older. I am glad you can both relate to this poem, and that you understand anybody of any age can be depressed and misunderstood. Thank you both for your support and kind comments, they are much appreciated Luv Toni xx
