Candle

I held that flickering flame
to light a candle in your name
A symbol of respect
Before God to genuflect

This light of love to symbolise
That passage of rite in our lives
It cannot mend a heart that's broken
But I give to you this token

I observe the rules with covered head
Respect my creed demands to the dead
For you will know that with this flame
My love for you will never wane

I back away, my eyes downcast
Leaving this eternal flame to last and last
This solitary light of the love I knew
When time calls I shall journey to you.

Emma

I loved this poem. Made me think of a huge church with candles all around and a lone figure stood with a candle at the front with head bowed.

Thanks Julie I appreciate your comments,  I don't tend to write much about religion although I do have a faith - and this is the nearest that I have gone to writing about it.

Take care  Emma

I have carried out this ritual many times Emma, but for my Mother.

You captured my feelings so well from those moments, beautifully written, Zydha
