aye

black-green embers in the falling sky
conjured-up by November's black nor'easter
[all hands answer] 'aye'

treble-wax timbers split like men's broken
necks - in surf boiled-up from hades own furnaces
'ey me mates - shark bait - were we all - RECALL?!
[all hands answer] 'aye'

forecastle takin' green water over rails strewn
with lashed-corpses of hands ordered to
reef sails long gone - long since drown in
the wake of god's almighty wrath

do ye remember boys - DO YE?!
[all hands answer] 'aye'

wheel jammed to port - runnin' circles in a sea
forsaken by all that's holy - all that's evil -
all

cap't Christian barkin' orders from a mouth filled
of sea foam and vomit - drwonin' where he was standin'
left arm caught in a rope as he swung port-to-starboard
starboard-to-port sword pointin' to the sky - it was

ARE YA WITH ME BOYS - CUT ME NOW IF I'M A LIAR - cut me
[all hands answer] 'aye'

then - oh heaven's beak - then - it appeared
[all hands murmur] 'aye - aye'
Oh yeah boys - you know - you know
you know the story so well - i needn't tell you or you -
but YOU - maybe YOU haven't heard
maybe YOU haven't curdled yer blood
in ocean's deep

[all hands answer] 'aye'

she was beautiful lads - you know she was
[all hands murmur] 'aye - oh aye'

out from the green mist of dead-men's breath she came
like . . . . . . . like . . . . . . . hope

greenest eyes sparklin' like the phosphors
in wave crests - like the light of life comin' to great
a dyin' child - - - - -
with black-black hair
flyin' out like tentacles from a nautilus
body of Sheba - limbs ivory soft and long -
delicate fingers beckoning the sea 'away - away'

oh god - me life passes before me now - as it did then
lashed to the mizzen with Stubbs, Boatswain John Greer, and
Chubbs Mahouley - we all saw what we saw
no one can take it away - the siren that saved us
the blue-green siren of Weymouth

i owe her - we owe her - with no way to pay - 'ey mates
no way to pay
[all hands answer] 'aye-aye'

'Come-along Boats you've had enough for ta'night - back ta
the home with ya - you can come tell stories again
next Tuesday'

OK lads - i'll go with ya now - but on Tuesday-next i can come back' - and we tell how it was
[all ghost-hands answer]  'aye - Chief Boatswain - aye'
______________

cheers,
m

wow...quite enthralling, Mikhail. I am a great fan of the writings of  Immanuel Velikovsky and his “Ages in Chaos?series. You kind of touch on those wonders he tries to explain.

This was an exciting read, crossing "The Bounty" with "Moby Dick" and the touch of "Sheba" is most effective...as is the ending. A really good piece of orininality well executed here, Mikhail. I can imagine it was difficult to find the balance to wind down from such excitement, well done (don't expect any crit from me on this, I couldn't, it's super) Zy

PS this is a place I made for somethings of this nature, short stories or simply story telling pieces, thanks for gracing it with this piece.

thanks very much Zy for taking the time to read and comment

sorry for being so bold as to ask - but i really wanted some feedback and it appears that this 'corner' of the corner isn't read that often

i also wrestled with putting this on the poetry part of the corner but it was too long and it did not rhyme much at all - read more like a story

i think writing about old hands having gone to sea is just another rather sneaky way for my internal poet to write about nature -  in the vernacular

i also think i - and others enthralled with the sea - are so because the sea provides graphic  - even epic - sturggles with the power contained therein - particularly since humans struggle in a medium in which their physiology doesn't allow them to go without devices like ships - or at lwast a floter of some kind

the tales of the sea are endless

thanks very much again Zy - great and insightful commentary as usual,

m

No problems in your asking, Mikhail, I was flattered, but this is worthy of placing on the main board. Do post it also there to get a more general view. I do keep an eye here, but have been lakse of late.

I often suggest to others to place pieces in Prose as then it stays on the surface much longer, especially if it is a story piece and has taken time in preparation. This part used to be read more frequently, Mikhail, or at least commented on, but as with the main page, some read more and don't always leave comments. Something I am endevouring to change. Everything goes through phases, Playpage was a popular spot until recently and it is quiet at the moment. The main board is that, and the others optional extras.

Your reply makes so much sense to me, Mikhail, my husband was an officer in the navy when we met (well, still in his last year of studies) but after nine years at sea, he has a love of being by the sea, as do we all and both homes here and in France are close to the shore and, we both love sailing. He takes the challenge more seriously than I though and used to do a lot of windsurfing off the shore. So, yes, the sea is indeed a wonderous source of nature and majestic with it. Zy

Thanks for the reply Zy

i was in the navy as well - but loved the water (prefer the sea) long before that

now i would like to live near the sea but am landlocked on the farm for now

thanks again,

Oh yeah

i don't think i'll put this on the main board - it looks like the folks are having a hard enough time commenting on reasonably short stuff

besides - i think this one is a 'special interest' type piece - where interested readers would have to have some connection with the sea in some way

thanks for your many kindnesses Zy - i am not very confident in my work and worry eternally about having something be misinterpreted

best,

m
