It was no good, she could see
no other way out of this situation,
she couldn't tell her husband.
Steve just wouldn't understand,
and anyway, he would only stop her.
She applied her make up carefully,
she had to look just right.
Putting on the clothes
purchased specially for today,
she turned and looked unhappily
at the suitability of her appearance.
Her heart fell, there's no going back,
no way out of what she had to do.
Leaving the bedroom,
she took a backwards glance,
her eyes settled for a moment
on their bed, tears blurred her vision
as she turned and slowly,
closed the door behind her.
Parking her car down a side street
of shabby dockside terraced houses,
the tatty, discoloured, curtains
only compounded her demise.
She walked down to the corner,
an involuntary gasp escaped
from her determined, tightened lips.
The bridge had come into full view
A sudden thought hit her.
"What if I change my mind?"
But...she had to accept that once
she had set this in motion,
there would be no turning back.
This was her only option.
She had marked today for this alone
and she would see it through...she had to.
She reached the balustrade
and glanced down at the moving water.
Some people were standing around
so she walked further along
towards the centre of the bridge
and stood there for a few moments,
shivering with apprehension,
then she heard the car and the voice.
"Hy Honey" it called to her.
"What's your price?"
"£35 for head and
£100 for the full treatment"
she stammered, looking at the water.
God, her throat was dry!
"Have we met before?"
he asked quizzically.
"There is something about you"
She felt her heart jump,
"Oh! It's not possible"
But it was, Steve was kerb crawling...her!
"Uh...I don't think so" and "Price ok for you?"
she added quickly, needing time to think.
"Yeah, sure Honey, the full treatment,
but, it can't be at my place."
"Oh Yes, it can!!! You bastard!"
she screamed at him,
bending down to the car window.
She pulled off her wig and sun glasses.
"So it wasn't my overspending
that got us into this mess, it was yours.
Do you know I had to get involved
with a loan shark, because
I am 'only' a housewife?
Have you any idea how worried
I have been about that receivership letter?
You can see what I was prepared to do.
And you blamed me for being extravagant!
Steve's expression was a mixture
of amazement, disbelief and guilt.
"Get in Honey, please,
let me take you home"
Now...he was looking embarassed.
"But it'll cost you" she sneered.
"And every other time, till that loan is paid off"
Silently, she smiled, and breathed a sigh of relief.
