http://www.gcn.cx/ GCN is an entire browser with free, moderated chat rooms. It will be the new home of the GTI Chat. There is a new GCN update to be downloaded. Once you're on the GCN server, if you go to Chat and select the List Active Rooms option, the GTI chat room will be found under the Role Playing category, when the room is open. If you do not see the room name listed, please don't try to enter the room, unless you have permission from Myranda. The software for GCN must be downloaded. It may take a few minutes, but it is not a large file. If it runs on my computer, it should run on any. When prompted, save the file to your computer. When it finishes downloading, open and install it. It will only take a moment. Launch the browser. When you have the program open, you will see a box that asks you to choose a screen name. Before entering any information, you must click the Register button. Choose a name and a password - there is a rather short character limit for names and passwords. You can register as many names as you want, but you can only use one at a time. Once you're logged in, you're free to chat. There are three ways to get to the GTI chat room: 1.) Go to the Chat option on the menu bar, select Enter Chat Room, and type in GoldenTigerInn . This will bring you right to the room. 2.) If you don't know if the room is currently open or want to see how many people are in it, go to the Chat option and select List Active Rooms. You can either scroll down and look for it, or use the option to List room names containing *text*, then type something in the box below it. For example, type golden. If the GTI chat is open, it will show up. Give the list a few seconds to load. You can also use the List Active rooms option to see who is currently chatting without actually going into the room. Select the room name on the list and right click for a list of options. 3.) If you are looking for a particular person you know is int he room, for example, Myranda, go to the Locate menu option and type the person's name in the box. It will tell you what room(s) they are in and allow you to enter that room. Once in the chat room, you can select a person's name by clicking on it, then right click on the name to bring up a list of options, such as sending private messages, playing games, viewing their profile, and ignoring that user. To make an action in the room, type /me before the action. For example, if I type /me goes to the bar it will show up as *Myranda goes to the bar* in purple. You can also use other forms of action, such as ~opens a window~ or ::slides down the bannister:: . When in the chat room, you can change your text color or alter the size of the text on the screen by going up to Options, right above the Chat button on the browser menu, and selecting Preferred Fonts. Also under the Options menu, you can create your own unique Away message that will be seen when other chat rooms users try to PM (private message) you. To create yourself a profile for your registered name, go to the Profile menu button and select Edit my Profile. To play a game with a user you know is connected, go to the Games menu button and select the game, then type in the person's name when prompted. This will invite them to the game. You can play Connect Five, Pong, or Chess. Clicking on Browser will open up a browser window, like Internet Explorer, with which you can go anywhere on the web. The Jabber button allows you to combine your messenger services, MSN Messenger, AOL Instant Messenger, Yahoo Instant Messenger, and ICQ, into one screen. In the lower left corner is the Translate button. This brings up a built-in language translator. This does not change the fact that the GTI is an English-speaking chat, and any foreign languages used, even fantasy languages, are to be translated in an OOC post. Another menu button is Online List. This is a buddy list for anyone logged in to GCN. If you click on this button and then Edit List, you can type in the names of the people you want to see. They will appear on the list when they log on. Under the Options menu, you can select to have the browser show your Online list when you sign on, so you will see right away if any of your buddies are online, and you'll be notified by a little popup box on the bottom of your screen when they sign on. When you see your buddies on the list, you can select their name and right click on it to see a list of options available to you, including sending that member a Private Message (PM), playing a game, Locating them to see if they are in any chat rooms and how long they've been idle for, and other things. You can also send them a PM just by double-clicking on their name. There are many other options available to GCN users. Take the time to explore. If anyone finds out what other options I haven't mentioned do and think they are worth mentioning, send me a message on the General message board here in the comm and I'll add it to the tutorial. |
