I'm on the fence. My first Dane was cropped and I loved it.  My next three were not.
I think it's up to the owner's choice.  Just my thoughts,
jeri

cropped is beautiful if it is done right. However, I wouldn't have it done if the dane I get in the future doesn't already have it done.

As Rhonda said,

If done right they are beautiful, but in my opinion, very few vets are qualified to crop ears correctly.

And I've seen way too many badly cropped ears, and not just on Danes, I'm including ALL breeds that normally have cropped ears.

Personally, I like uncropped ears, and I've had Great Danes, Dobermans, Mini Pins, and Pit Bull Terriers..................I think uncropped ears add to their personialties.

Natural.  I love a silly floppy ear.  And, I have a hard time w/the notion of putting a dog through an unecessary cosmetic procedure.

I prefer natual ears.

Rhonda is absolutely correct, there is nothing worse than a bad crop.  You have to find a vet that specializes in cropping of your breed if that is your choice.  It can not be a vet that does Dobes to do a Dane, etc.  Each cropping for the breeds that are cropped is different.

Taping is another major issue.  You can have a great crop and it can be ruined by not taping correctly or long enough.  If not attended to on a daily basis you can also end up with infections which in some cases could cause the dog to lose part of their ears.

Natural ears are what God gave them and I like what he did.

Cropping started years ago to protect the dog during hunting and other duties that they performed.  Keeping the ears from getting ripped during a hunt, torn by brush or an attacker whether it be another animal or humans.

Again though it is personal choice.  Should a person want cropped ears they can not be done just anytime.  They must be done prior to or no later than 12 weeks of age.

I like either look. I've owned both cropped and natural..with that said I won't have another Dane cropped (unless of course it has already been done prior to purchase). Banjo is natural.

I have no problems with cropping (obviously, since Barrett's cropped!) BUT I have a lot of conditions and stipulations that go with it. I wouldn't recommend that just anyone get their dane cropped. In fact, I do my best to deture them from it and make sure they know all the work involved, the potential problems if not done right, etc.  If after hearing all the negatives they are still wanting to do the crop, then I tell them all the tips and tricks we learned while caring for Barrett's crop. I'm not totally sure we will crop any future danes we own. Only because by the time we get another dane, the vet that cropped Barrett's ears will most likely have retired (he's like 65 years old). He was Brandon's dad's neighbor when he was a kid and has raised, bred, and provided vet care for danes for almost 30 years. If he didn't crop, Barrett would more than likely have floppy ears! There is only 2 ways we'd have any future danes cropped - if the vet that cropped Barrett was still practicing, or if he highly recommended someone to do the cropping.

I don't think we get a choice here in Oz, I think it is illegal here to have dogs ears or tails cropped. Obviously if you are bringing a dog in from overseas that is already cropped that is allowed. I must go check on this but I am fairly sure I am right.

Oh I so wish I didn't do that google search for cropped ears, I just read some horrific accounts of what people have done to fighting dogs - broke my heart.

Anyway, I did find this from the Australian National Kennel Club

The Australian National Kennel Council and its Member Bodies abhor the practice of cropping of ears of any breed of dog. The act of ear cropping is an offense under the Rules and Regulations of the Australian National Kennel Council and its Member Bodies.

Dogs imported into Australia with cropped ears shall not be permitted to compete in Conformation breed classes but may compete in official Obedience and Field Trials. Such dogs are limited to "For Exhibition Only" at Conformation events.

Any dog with ears that have been cropped in Australia is not allowed to participate in any recognised ANKC activity, which includes Obedience Training This applies to dogs born after 1.1.93.
