Hi,
I'm a little confused with the bible passage, where Jesus tells his followers to look at his hands to show the marks of where the nails were.  This is when Jesus rose again and met with his followers.

Anyways, my main problem with that is that the Romans would not have put a nail through the palm of the hands.  Why because your hands cannot hold your body on the cross, instead if they did that the weight of your body would rip your hands apart.  When they did crucifixions they would have put the nails into just below your wrists because that spot could indeed hold the weight of your body.  (Yes, it is a little scary that I know these things.)

My confusion comes from could it have been a mistranslation somewhere along the lines...to is the bible incorrect on this manner??  (which, if so, that would open up a whole other can of worms)...

I have read the same thing as Doz.  They apparently considered the wrist as part of the hand.

HOWEVER--it has always been my thought that the Romans knew the actual palm was weak about bearing weight and I figure they roped the arms to the cross so the hand wouldn't bear it after all.

They hung the person in such a manner that they could not breathe without pushing down with their legs.  They had to push their bodies up for every breath.  That is why they broke the thieves legs--so they would suffocate and die.

Good question.  It may have been in the wrist, or they may have roped up the arms.  We will learn when we see Him face to face!

Doz,
Thanks for clearing that up.  So, to some degree it was a mistranslation into English...because we don't have just one word meaning hand, wrist, and part of your arm....
Thanks!

The Romans were excellent at torture methods...

The actual palm couldn't hold the weight of your body.  The part if just beyond the wrist (or right next to the wrist) can, in fact, hold your body.  I'm sure they would use some rope...that way the bodies could be left there for days!

During the slave revolt (think Sparticus) the Appian Way into Rome was lined on both sides with rotting bodies.  Those bodies were left there to literally just rot off!  It was also meant as a method to suppress any future slave revolts.

I find it interesting how Jesus died on the cross so, quickly.  I remember in my Roman Empire class we learned how sometimes people would suffocate for 12 hours or more or the soldiers wouldn't break your legs to just let you suffer, until your lungs collapsed.  There are reports of people (who obviously were strong enough) to literally suffer for a couple days before their lungs collapsed.  It was definitely a horrible way to die!

Right Doz.

Our Lord said no man could take His life but that He had received the power from the Father to lay it down and take it up again.

Christ chose His moment to die.

You see, the Passover Lamb was to be sacrificed at an exactly moment of time.  The exact moment Christ gave His life after six hours on the Cross (from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. our time).

Doz,
I thought maybe I was being a tad bit gruesome.  But, you did turn that gruesomeness into another way of looking at it.  That Jesus died on the cross when he was supposed to die.
