Ways to manage the effects of PKD

How can someone with PKD help slow the onset or progression of PKD?

According  to the  Polycystic Kidney Foundation www.pkdcure.org

  • Learn as much as you can about PKD.

  • Find yourself a good kidney specialist Nephrologist or Urologist. You can do this by contacting the Department of Nephrology or Urology at a major medical center nearest your home. Ask the Head of the Department to recommend a Nephrologist or Urologist familiar with PKD. Even contact your local PKD Chapter Coordinator for information on a Nephrologist nearest you.

  • Keep your blood pressure under control. Check with your doctor for the proper medications and lose weight if necessary.

  • Avoid cigarettes. They can raise your blood pressure.

  • Eat a propper diet. Talk to your physician about counseling with a Renal Dietitian Eating the right foods can make you feel better!

  • Avoid all forms of caffeine such as:

coffee ,tea, colas, chocolate and some forms of aspirins such as Anacin & Excedrin. Always consult your Nephrologist or Urologist before taking anything over the counter.

Read labels to check for caffeine content.
  • Treat all urinary tract or bladder infections immediately. Contact your physician.

  • Do not use any over-the-counter  medication without checking with your doctor. AVOID drugs that contain Ibuprofen  such as Advil, Medipren, Motrin or Nuperin

  • Exercise your body. Staying fit by walking, swimming, or light aerobics keeps your body healthy, lean and less prone to problems that can hasten the disease.
