The body
-The body is almost square shaped. The back should be straight, strong and not bending or arched. It is possible to have crowns at the shoulders. There is the distinctive like of hair growing opposite to the rest along the backbone. It varies in shapes and sizes, which will be discussed in greater detail later..
There are two kinds of body of the dogs.
- First, in Kaew Kiaw mango.
- Second, in Pim Sen Mun mango.
Both characters should be considered from the chest, shoulders and belly by viewing the dog from it’s side.
-The height and length of the body: The scale of the height and length for a dog is 10 to 10. For a bitch, the scale is 9 to 10, making them appear to have an arched top line.
-The Chest: Half of the dog’s height is the depth of the chest. The chest should gradually taper down from the tuck of the belly. It reaches the elbows, giving the appearance of strength and grace. It can hold larger lungs, increasing the dog’s stamina and endurance. The additional height is the length of the forelegs.
-The angle of the front shoulders: The shoulder area should be well let down making the muscles easy to see. The shoulder blades should make a90 degree angle with the front legs. With this trait, it would allow the dogs to have a deep swollen chest and a longer stride. If the shoulders make 95 degrees with the front legs, the dogs would have a dry chest with unbalanced gaits.
-Belly: The stomach should be curving with a constricted waist, but not so slim that it is easy to see the ribs.
-Buttocks should be a little bit leaning.
-The skin should be thick so it can withstand scratching. You can test to see if the skin is thick by holding the skin in the neck or the back areas. If you get a handful, This means that the dog has thick skin.
The legs are divided into the front legs, rear legs and the gaps between the front and rear legs.
TRD Legs
-The front legs should be straight and parallel, not arched, crooked, bending or open wide. The gap between the front legs should be wide. The front elbows should be balanced with the chest.
-The rear legs should be moderately angled to the back. The strong muscles should be easily visible. The hocks should be moderately bent supporting the sloping croup.
-The gait between the front legs and rear legs should be well balanced with the length of the body and the height of the dog. If the body is too long, the buttocks would be swinging when the dog walks or runs, the legs would be too short and not in good balance. The best characters are displayed when the dog walks raising his head, lifting tail and not spreading his legs.
Feet
-paws should be big with well arched toes, not splay footed and should be round like that of a cat. They should look well balanced with the size of the body and legs when the dog stands.
-Toes: There are five toes on the front paws and 4 toes for the rear paws for a total of 18 toes. There should not be any protruding toes or dewclaws on the rear legs or feet.
-All of the nails should be the same color and should be harmonious with the color of the coat. The most common nail color are red, black and brown.
Tail
-There is 16-20 vertebrae in the tailbone. It should located strait off the backbone. The shape of the tail should be like a sword and slightly curved. The length of the tail should be a little longer than the hock joints. A good tail should not be twisted, crooked, arched or curved upward over the back.
Height and weight.
- Estimate 21-25 inches (52-63cms) tall and 46-56 lbs (21-25 kilograms) in weight for a dog.
- Estimate 19-23 inches (47-58cms) tall and 41-50 lbs (19-23 kilograms) in weight for a bitch.
Gait
-The dog should have a graceful gait, like that of a horse, with an arching neck, raised head, a straight top line with an erected tail and ears displaying their alertness.
Color and Coat
The Thai Ridgeback dog comes in a variety of colors. There isn’t any relevance as to which color is most correct or important. It all depends on what color the breeder prefers or what color is hardest to find. What is important is that the coat be of one solid color.
Colors of hair.
1. Blue-gray or gray Thai Ridgeback dogs.
The dogs were originally bred by Ruang Paripon Potchanapisut. In the first few generations, the dogs had long blackish-gray hair, ashy-gray, and a molten silver color. In the present time, they were mated with dogs from Trad and Chantaburi provinces and produced the Thai Ridgeback dogs with a short and fine velvet-like coat. The ridges in this color are not usually big and most often seen are the lute and arrow ridges. Their bloodlines are unstable because there are still some hidden defects. They still need to be developed in order to create the perfect bloodlines. Now, the blue Ridgeback dogs with velvet-coats and eyes in embolic myrobalan coloration are the most beautiful and rare to be found.
2. Red Thai Ridgeback dogs
These are the original domesticated dogs in some Eastern provinces, such as Trad, Chantaburi and Rayong. The length of the hair is medium and short, not too long. Then the reds were developed into Ridgeback dogs with short, fine and velvet-like hair. The bloodlines are more stable than any other bloodlines. They will give red puppies with larger and wider ridges. They are presently in fashion and their coat colors include pale brown, brown and dark brown.
3. Black Thai ridgeback dogs
The Black Ridgeback dog is the dominant base color amongst the other colors. Their color should be completely black, which makes the hair look shiny and beautiful. Their skin should also be black. In some Black Ridgeback dogs, their nails, nipples and noses are black too.
4. White Ridgeback dogs.
These are the most rare and difficult to be found. They appear very clean , beautiful and solid white. Their hair can be short, fine and velvet-like. The white Ridgeback dog family includes the dogs in white with some inserted tones of brown, red, pink and pale yellow. The color of the nose should be black but some are albino color or pink. The eyes are red, red-tone black or yellow. The skin should be white or gray in order to make the hair to look whiter. The nails should also be white or pinkish.
5. Green Ridgeback dogs.
They are one of the most important blood lines, but they have become very scarce. The color of the hair is 70-80 % pale brown and 20-30% black. The hybrids from this family will be blue-gray in color
