So Tika is direct import from Thailand?
How come You choose Peter to buy from? Was it cause You liked Tika´s parents? Or have You never seen them? Did You visit Peter before You bought Tika? Or You bought her without seeing her? (I want to know if You were very "lucky" in getting such a nice female, or if You picked her yourself) |

Susanne About 4+ years ago I first began looking for information on TRDs. On the web I found a few sites, and Peter's was one. The time wasn't right for a new dog, but I saved the information for later. Then, summer 92, I e-mailed Peter asking him lot of questions on TRDs. We e-mailed back and forth allmost every day for close to one year before Tika came to Denmark. We came to know each other well, and when the time came and I was able to include a dog in our life, Peter began looking for a dog for me. He travelled around for 2 weeks looking for a good enough dog for me. When he came back, he e-mailed, that he hadn't found a suitable dog, but he had kept one for breeding from his last litter, and if I wantet that one, I could have it. He then sent some pics, and I liked her a lot. In all fairness it has to be said, that he did find one other dog, and sent a picture of it, but I found it too old, and not quite goodlooking enough. Tika's thai name is Chekley's Anakot, meaning Chekley's Future and her calling name was Dao meaning Star. Apart from other great features, she had this great look in her eyes and her facial expression just threw me. So in a way (small as it may be) you can say, that I saw her befor deciding to bye her. Trust beeing a main part of the deal. And Peter certainly lived up to it. Later I found a site with negtive opinions on him, but I can't recognize any of the problems they mentioned. I never got any pictures of her parents; unfortunately there was a flood i the area and a lot got lost. The warnings were many and grave. The Danish Kennel Klub directly warned me against buying a TRD. Not that they knew more about the breed than any other tourist on Thai beaches. But that was what their warning was built on. And yes, I do consider myself lucky. Tika is a good looking, smart and sweet dog, and she too has her special TRD characteristics, wich only make us love her more. Dan-Thai |

Peter Checkley did have other rare breed connections in the UK and I think he did or does have a share in a Scottish Kennel. You can try to see Mom Somkit dogs by asking Jack or going on his site. I think you have been incredibly lucky to get such a good dog but I dont imagine you will be able to get her ancestors pictures or more details of her pedigree. Visit BATR or The UK Home of the Thai Ridgeback for more info. My experience was via Rhodesians but I have never bought any dog of another breed, though there were 2 breeds I wanted, via his UK connections. Some businesses in the 'kennel' world change breed or partnership so quickly, in the UK, that it can be difficult to get detail. I will have a look and see if I can get anything off the UK connections, if they are still active. Fabia |

Hi, My dogs are also grazy in searching a mouse. My german shepard also eats them if she catch one, and she also eats the ones Filou and Vichy catch. (She never had any disease or worms she has only the power of 100 mice) My girls get very early good mouse hunter, but Filou catch his first mouse with 2 1/2 years. Before he jump over the gras a few times, and after that he went back to see if he jump on one. This didn´t function but he needed a really long time to recognize that he have to look first and jump than. :) If you ask Filou and Vichy "Where is the mouse?", they start digging and they have a very good condition in digging! Like Tika does it on the picture. greets nadine |

Serge, have You seen Mom Somkit´s dogs? I remember someone mention that some old breeder (woman) died. was it she who died?? (sorry for this horrible question if I remember wrong!) Does she (or did) breed different colors or only red? Does/did she show her dogs often? (dog show competition). |

I mailed Peter Checkley for some years ago, I remember a picture of this mum Somkit, and she was introduced as the breeder of the best dogs in Thailand. Perhaps someone has this pic o another of her. I also remember Peters mix of fruits (bananas and so on) he gave his dogs! /Tina |

Tina ! You can see Mum Somkit picture every month in Dog magazine, and it's true that she is the Top TRD breeder and the breeder of the best dogs in Thailand. - according what the ADVERTISING wrote. There are also a lots of information that I saw in the other website are just COPY or TRANSLATED from Dog magazine, you can believe it if you want. Bananas and Pumpkin are good resourse for high protein and cheaper than meat, but think about if the protein resourse for dog food are not from meat, what will occur to your dog? Thaidane |

Yes, I too read Peter's web site and fed Tika bananas, as a snack, and Tika loved them - but - her bowels reacted by getting very speedy as weel as producing liters of flatulence . Not nice. She no longer gets bananas. If the dog's stomache reacts strongly to a food object, I think one should be carefull not using it again if possible. Dan-Thai |

Serge, I think I read it somewhere on one of Jack´s site. Or maybe Jack wrote it on for example Edwins site... I am not sure... Maybe it was not Mom Somkit, it is possible. The only thing I am sure of is that it was a female TRD breeder, but I am not sure of the name. So Mom Somkit is still alive?? |

You give a bit of a split message here Serge... You write that "it's true that she is the Top TRD breeder and the breeder of the best dogs in Thailand" as if this is Your thinking. Then You write; "according what the ADVERTISING wrote" as if this is not Your thinking, only You giving info about what is said on the ad. |

Yes! it's not my thinking and info. It's just said to Tina this is where Peter's understand from and introducing her as what the ad wrote. You may wrong, there are no other female TRD breeder here. If I'm not wrong, Jack are talking about Khun Somsit in Edwin place ,the owner of the famous BLUE but not Mum Somkit. Thaidane |

I think a more delicate 'translation' is required: Peter Checkley had a number involvements with kennels here (UK) and abroad and still does, not just rare breeds. It is extremely difficult to obtain information about his businesses as he changes fairly often, partners and so on. Mom Somkit commissions her own advertising as do most breeders, but again, it is very difficult to get information in the public realm. I prefer transparency and openness but if course some 'professional breeders' will not have the business capacity for maintaining full, public web sites. I think that says quite clearly that neither would make ideal breeders or buyers for a newcomer from abroad unless they were very clear and specific and visited the animals they wished to purchase. The situation for those more experienced would, of course, be different. I hope that makes what myself and Serge were saying, clearer, for any newcomers to the Thailand market. Fabia |
