Again, my thanks to our resident L1A1/C1A1 guru, Kevin Adams, for this information on the designations for Commonwealth and Indian bayonets.
The correct designations for the bayonets are:
Australian
Bayonet, L1A2 (made to the British L1A2 pattern)
There are 6 known versions + parade examples.
British Bayonet, L1A1 (very rare and expensive to buy)
Bayonet, L1A2 (not produced by the British, but designation given for the method of manufacturing)
Bayonet, L1A3 (recessed bayonet catch)
Bayonet, L1A4 (as above + a different method of assembly)
There are heaps of sub variations of the above bayonets including converted L1A1 to L1A3, bayonets with investment cast parts, parade versions etc.
Canadian
Bayonet, C1 (made to the British L1A2 pattern)
Known to be at least two versions + parade examples.
Indian
Bayonet, 1A
Generally the only bayonet you will find for sale is the rare 10-inch blade version, There are 8 inch bladed versions. The 8-inch blade versions can look like the L1A2 or L1A3 type bayonets, and all have wood grips).
Below, top to bottom:
Australian L1A2 bayonet; British L1A3 bayonet; Canadian C1 bayonet; Indian 1A bayonet (10-inch blade).
