On the back way into Camp Shilo (CFB) near Brandon, Manitoba Canada is a small town, well maybe a small hamlet, named Douglas. As you drive through, you cannot help but to notice this small, yet very outstanding WW1 War Memorial to the local men who fought and died. Its a WW1 German 7.92mm MG08 on the correct sled mount. Even the rear sight is up too. This MG was brought back by local vets returning from The Great War, as a trophy. Many Legions dotting the prairie provinces have these MG's plus MG08/15's still on display, both indoors and out, to this day. A very interesting poem to the dead too, if you can read it. Took this pic in Aug 2000, on a route recce when I was on Ex Long Look 2000 with Cdn Forces. |
