German "Infantry Knife Model 1942". My Uncle who is now in his 80's can only be described as a 25 yr old stuck in the body of an older fellow. Back in 1945, his regiment, the 8th Recce Regt of the Canadian Army was deep in the Hochweldt (spelling error I am sure) Forrest, immediatly after an operation, where many of the dead lay were they fell, from both sides. He came upon two dead soldiers. One Canadian, and one German. They were on top of each other, and both had died in each other's arms. The German had been killed with his own knife. My Uncle Jack pulled this knife from the dead German's throat, and kept it. The wooden handgrips were damaged, and were replaced with plexi glass from a downed US B-25 Mitchell. He gave it to me in the late 80's. He resides in the town of Big River, Sask. Canada. He is active with the Royal Canadian Legion, and is often down at the club. I had a few beers with him in July 2000. He sure is good company. Recently his son and grand daughter were here in Australia on holiday. |
