The Owl The Owl is at home in the night. It has great awareness of all that is around it at all times. It has predator vision, which means it sees clearly what it looks at. It has great intuition: it is the totem of psychics and clairvoyants. It has the courage to follow its instincts. Owl's medicine includes seeing behind masks, silent and swift movement, keen sight, messenger of secrets and omens, shape-shifting, link between the dark, unseen world and the world of light, comfort with shadow self, moon power, freedom.
Owls symbolize wisdom, the ability to see things that are hidden, stealth, swiftness, darkness, freedom, dreams, shape-shifting, secrets, omens, clairvoyance, astral projection, magick, deception, observation, total truth, night, death and misfortune. They are connected to the Underworld and the Moon. They are connected to The Goddess in general, as well as Athena, Mari, Lilith, Anath, Gwynn ap Nudd, Blodeuwedd, Yama and Cailleach. Barn Owl: Barn owls are the ones who see without seeing and hear without hearing; the ones who can hear what is not spoken and ones that see things without physical sight.
Owl (Cailleach, Oidhche, Comachag): These birds were most often associated with the Crone aspect of the Goddess. The word "cailleach" in the Scottish-Gaelic means "owl". The owl is often a guide to and through the Underworld, a creature of keen sight in darkness, and a silent and swift hunter. It can help unmask those who would deceive you or take advantage of you.
| Through the ages, the owl has carried the symbolism of Wisdom.

You may start to receive spiritual messages coming through or intuitive feelings about your question. | Owl Fact & Myth Owl is territorial, a vicious fighter and a courageous defender of the nest. This is why Owl inspired and protected the Greek armies, and why Roman soldiers believed Owl signified triumph in battle. The Japanese drink a toast to Owl before a hunting expedition, and Russians believe Owl is sacred because it once saved the life of Genghis Khan. Owl is monogamous in love. Therefore, Australian aborigines believe Owl represents the soul of women. French spinsters call on Owl to help them find a husband. Also in France, when a pregnant woman hears the cry of Owl, her child will be a girl. Owl's approach to rearing offspring is sometimes brutal. Many Owl chicks starve or are killed by siblings, depending on food availability. Perhaps because of these cruel survival tactics, African Swahili tribesmen believe Owl brings illness to children. Moroccans believe that Owl's cry can kill an infant. Still, some Owl offspring always survive to produce more Owls; consequently, Owl amulets protect Babylonian women during childbirth. Dawn, dusk, and the dead of the night is Owl's domain. Owl is the Hopi god of the dead, guardian of fires, and tender of all underground things. Owl attends Lilith, the Sumerian Goddess of death, and in Mexico is called "messenger of the lord of the land of the dead". Popular belief holds that seeing Owl or hearing its cry means impending death, sickness, and misfortune. Therefore, Owl is too evil to name in Cameroon, and is known only as "the bird that makes you afraid". You may have Owl Medicine if you frequently see, hear, or dream of Owl, or if you have gifts of invulnerability, insight, invisibility, keen observation, wisdom, and curative healing powers. Owl Medicine According to mythology, if a person does something wrong, they may become Owl. Gwydion the Magician turned the unfaithful Blodeuwedd of Celtic Myth into Owl for betraying a magical secret. The Supreme Being of Borneo turned his wife into Owl after she told secrets to mortals. In Poland, girls who are married turn into Owl when they die. Witches are sorcerers transform into Owl. The majority of indigenous tribal people around the world believe they do too, as shape-shifting is a common practice among shaman and magicians of various cultures. If Owl Comes Calling If you are visited by Owl, do not panic. Instead, try to interpret what the visit might mean. For instance, you can interpret Owl's cry by number. One hoot is an omen of impending death Two hoots means success in whatever project you start next. Three hoots represents a woman who will marry into the family. Four hoots indicates disturbance. Five hoots denote coming travel. Six hoots means guests are on the way. Seven hoots are a sign of mental disease. Eight hoots foretell sudden death. Nine hoots symbolize good fortune. If you hear an Owl hoot late at night, return the call to avoid bad luck. You can also take off an item of clothing and put it on again inside out, or get up from bed and turn your left shoe upside down. If you see Owl do the following: Throw salt in a fire to avert any possible danger. Propitiate Owl by setting food, a shiny crystal, or some silver coins near the place where Owl appeared.Dedicate an altar to Owl. Cover it with a blue cloth. Place jewelry, and a moonstone, pearl, or crystal upon it. Ask the Lunar Goddess Artemis, Hecate, and Diana for help and protection. Finally, never injure Owl, as it is our teacher and elder, and should always be respected. Owl’s Message Key Words: Messenger, healing, wisdom, insight, clairvoyance, life/death, loyalty/devotion The Big Picture: Something is hidden from you. But the appearance of owl in your life indicates that you’re able to see the truth behind what is hidden in a situation, relationship, or event. It may be time for you to delve more deeply into a study of the occult, shamanism, reincarnation and communication with the dead. If owl appears while someone you know is ill, it may be warning you that the person is getting ready to cross over. The owl can also signal a change in your sleep cycle or be alerting you that you are more creative at night. In terms of your personal health, the owl encourages you to seek alternative therapies and help from alternative practitioners. If you have a persistent health problem, you may want to consider having a regression to find out if the problem stems from a past life. As always, consider the context of your experience with an owl. The weather, the time of day or night, and the owl’s actions are all significant. Romance: If you’re not involved with anyone right now, you will be shortly. The relationship is likely to be emotionally intense and the other person may be something of a loner who is involved in or interested in metaphysics. If you’re involved now, then the relationship may move to the next level. You’ll know intuitively what’s going on. Communication is important to you in relationships and it’s important that the other person also communicates his or her feelings. Past life connections may be involved. Finances: By summer, you could be earning money through psychic or metaphysical work. Work with your dreams for guidance about finances and request specific dreams that will alert you to new opportunities. Work/Career: You vigorously defend your territory and are something of a predator when it comes to the hierarchy at work. However, you don’t have the full picture and it would be to your advantage to hone your own skills to get ahead professionally. Health: Have you considered alternative therapies? Homeopathy, acupuncture, even yoga or tai chi may be what you need right now. It’s also possible, that on an emotional level, you need roots, a place you can call home. You may need to change your sleep cycle, at least experiment with different sleep cycles. Seek guidance from your dreams related to your general health. Family: Someone in your family, children or mate, needs your support and protection right now. Give it freely without expecting anything in return. Creativity: You’re entering a period on your life when your most creative time is at night. This doesn’t mean you have to stay up all night to be creative. But you may want to set aside several hours at night, after the rest of the family is asleep, to do what you love. Your creative adrenalin will flow most easily in the evening. Spirituality: Consider taking workshops in shamanism. You have a talent for altered states of consciousness, alternative healing techniques and metaphysical practices. If someone you love has recently passed away, that person’s death may be the trigger your spiritual journey. Bibliography: Totem Animals Chant for Owl: "Soft darkness of night, a time of deep magick, Your realm, great owl whose eyes see reality in the darkness. I would call up wise and deep magicks, Magicks bold and strong, creating change." Owl Owl was one of the primary power animals from the earliest times of shamanism in Siberia thousands of years ago. Often in the east, brought by the wind, owl comes out of the darkness into dusk or dawn. Owl takes you deep into your own inner world. The owl can go anywhere. She glides silently on the currents of your own dreams. Just as easily as she flies inside the tree trunk or inside your dreams. The owl is a witness in silence and clarity. With owl, you start in a place where you are seen for who you are. Everything about your life; your dreams, your imagination, your spirit; is seen with clarity. The unconscious becomes revealed. When the owl looks inside us, we understand we can go wherever we desire. Owl teaches that life is not about being loved unconditionally but rather being seen unconditionally. When owl is present, there is no judgment. She sees with a gaze that is pristine, clear, real, and truthful. Shamans start at the place where they see themselves as they truly are, with clear vision. Nothing hides from owl. Nothing is invisible. The power of this clarity of vision is great. As owl takes you into her body, you can fly through darkness with precision and grace. The unknown becomes clear. It is as if you become part of the darkness with perfect safety. This perfection in flight, and in life, becomes yours. With owl, we see beyond death to rebirth. Sometimes people fear owl because they want their vision to stop at death. Owl sees through the veils of death to the other side. She tells you the legends of owls, singing to you, "Come through my feathers, go into the darkness. I will show you what lives there, I will show you the world within." Owl brings visions to light, dreams to consciousness. Let yourself embody the spirit of owl. Her way of seeing is deeper than your own, and she will show you how to go there with her. As you see through the eyes of the owl, you see what she sees in the darkness, and you hear what she hears. Go within, travel in silence. In the darkness, truth is revealed. The essence of the owl is inner vision and the ability to look deep inside ourselves without fear. Bibliography: The Path of the Feather | | Owl: deception, clairvoyance, insight (the night eagle) Owls come in all sizes, from a tiny miniature that actually lives inside the cactus in the desert, to the great horned owl, which is the only bird that can out fly the golden eagle. A fully grown great horned is an awe inspiring creature. Its talons are furry, and closely resemble the paws of a baby mountain lion with claws extended. It is a meat eater, which means it can be a fierce warrior if challenged, or if something dear to it is threatened. It is often referred to as Night Eagle. Owl is at home in the night. Owl's medicine includes seeing behind masks, silent and swift movement, keen sight, messenger of secrets and omens, shape-shifting, link between the dark, unseen world and the world of light, comfort with shadow self, moon power, freedom. Silent and swift movement; keen sight into obscure events; unmasking those who would deceive you. In meditation, often a guide to and from the Underworld. Wisdom, magick, darkness, freedom. Dreams, shape-shifting, Clairvoyance, astral projection, magick. A messenger of hidden truth, secrets, and omens. Moon magick. Wisdom to make positive change. The owl is often a guide to and through the Underworld, a creature of keen sight in darkness, and a silent and swift hunter. It can help unmask those who would deceive you or take advantage of you. Owl Lore Owls are silent hunters of the night. They have been part of human stories since earliest times. Many cultures honor these nocturnal predators as powerful spirit allies that teach shamans the roads of the dead, how to find lost objects, and how to see to the core of a problem. Owl is often a messenger of the transition between worlds, particularly the worlds of birth and death. They preside over prophecy and divination. This is a bird of the betwixt and the between. The owl is not entirely of either this world or the next. |

Snowy owl: Owl's Wisdom Includes: Silent and swift movement Keen sight Hearing the unsaid Shape-shifting Link between the dark, unseen world and the world of light Freedom There are approximately 135 species of Owl, seventeen which are found in North America. Their secretive habits, quiet flight and various calls from whistles, screeches and hoots, have made them objects of superstition and even fear in some parts of the world. Some native tribes see the owl as a symbol of death while other tribes believe they embody the mysteries of shamanism and sorcery. Individuals with this totem are private complex people and don't like others to know what they are really thinking. This can sometimes lead to misunderstandings especially in the area of personal relationships. Owls have many abilities which set them apart from all other birds. Their wings which are extremely soft and thick, allow them to fly silently as they can swoop down on unsuspecting prey. They are able to slip in and out of places unnoticed and can teach us how to do the same. Their eyes are large and forward facing giving them a wise appearance. They have a greater range of motion in their necks than any other animal with a spinal column. Owls turn their heads rather than their eyes, which are stationary. Their night vision is so powerful that they can see prey when the light is the equivalent of a candle burning 2500 feet away! Their powers of vision are matched by their almost otherworldly hearing abilities. In studies done with owls that were placed in totally light free rooms, the owls were able to locate a mouse by sound alone. Those with this medicine are usually gifted with clairvoyant and clairaudient abilities. Souls who are born with this totem have chosen a path which suggests a need to refine and perfect these gifts for the aid of others. They make excellent therapists, psychologists and counselors. The old Roman word for owl is strix, the same as their word for witch. Throughout northern Europe, the owl is also associated with witchcraft. Wicca means "wise ones," and the Witches of this tradition emphasize the owl as one of their principal animal totems.
Universally, the owl is a symbol for wisdom, and it is the totem animal for such ancient goddesses as Athene, Lilith, and Blodeuwedd, the Welsh Virgin Goddess of spring. Tiazolteotl, the Aztec goddess, shepherded the souls of women who died in childbirth and had the owl and the snake as her totem animals. To the Winnebago, the owl ruled the north, the land of the unknown, of cold, dark forests; of death. Many Native American tribes believed that if they heard an owl calling their name, they were soon to join the Grandparents in the spirit world. In Celtic lore, the owl was also the "corpse bird" that carried the recently deceased to the underworld. In the Rio Grande area of the Southwest, owls were considered the familiar that witches prefer over black cats, If one heard an owl hooting above one's rooftop at night, it was certain that evil was soon to visit the home.
The Zuni believed that if a family incurred the wrath of a witch, the evilworker would plant owl feathers in their cornfield, thus summoning a strong wind to destroy the crop.
The Apaches kept a wary eye out for Big Owl, a bloodthirsty, evil giant who took the form of a huge owl and carried humans off to eat them. Although the Japanese generally regard the owl as a wise and benevolent night creature, most of the cultures of Asia fear the bird as a demon of darkness that delights in carrying off human souls. Conversely, in the Polynesian tradition, the owl is a special protector in battles or danger and brings back to life any souls that may be lost and wandering. If you have long cherished the owl as a totem animal, you are quite likely a student of the mysterious and the unknown who loves to ferret out clues to the unexplained enigmas of existence on the Earth Mother. You probably enjoy watching magicians perform their craft, and you may even be an amateur magician. Even your closest friends may consider you something of a paradox, on the one hand, you seem to worship logic and reason; on the other, you appear to prefer fantasy and the illogical.
With the owl as your spirit helper, you will not cease to explore the most distant perimeters of the unknown; And you will not cease spending an equal amount of time in the Silence, receiving messages from the Great Mystery. |

Spirit of Great Horned Owl Role: ~Extractor of Secrets~ Lesson: Timing Element: Water Wind: West ~The Quest Within~ Medicine: Clairaudience ~Keywords~ Insight into the Shadow Self Feminine Power Timing Extractor of Secrets Clairaudience Sensuality Protection of the Unseen Sister to Red-Tailed Hawk Able to Hear What is Not Spoken Harbinger of New Cycles Extractor of Secrets The large eyes of the Owl appear to miss nothing as they glimmer into the night, and indeed their vision is amongst the keenest in the animal kingdom, the rods and cones of their eyes designed in such a way as to allow in the smallest amount of light in order to penetrate through the veil of darkness in search of prey. This uncanny vision has earned the Owl the reputation of being able to pierce beyond the veil that separates the ~physical~ world from the ~spirit~ world, a reputation that as a Animal Totem is well deserved. Yet in filtering out the light from the darkness, Owl reminds us that both exist simultaneously, and that it is up to us to recognize both. ***For the two-legged beside whom Owl flies, the implication of the Gift of such penetrating sight is highly significant, for there will exist the ability to see beyond the masks that are worn by ~Others~ to the true face beneath. This ability may also be nurtured to give the Owl Soul greater insight into the lessons which exist cocooned within every encounter and experience they face while on the Earthwalk. What the Owl individual does with information received via higher "sight" or intuition, is dependent upon both that person's level of maturation as well as upon other Primary Totems. For instance, if one has Owl as their Power Totem yet also has Lynx as a Mission Totem, then the knowledge and insight indicated by both of these Spirit Animals will be kept private and shared in subtle & unobtrusive ways with the person who the information has been gathered about, if spoken at all. On the other hand, if the Mission Totem of the Owl individual is Black Panther, then the information garnered will be spoken directly to the individual involved, then perhaps later utilized as an example to Others regarding the lessons inherent in that "knowing." When the Owl soul is not sufficiently mature, or there exist underlying and unresolved issues, the information gained can be either used against the person who has been "sussed," or the personal details may be shared with others who have no business in knowing such details. Though most Owl individuals are strictly confidential by nature, there are a few that can`t seem to resist sharing what they know freely despite a breach in confidence. Yet for the Owl individual that is operating from ~Higher Intent,~ their code of ethics and confidentiality will guide them through the decision of whether or not, and how much, of the information received is meant to be shared with the one whom they have unmasked. These are the souls that constitute some of the finest clergy and therapists, as their insight into human behavior and penchant for confidentiality and respect of privacy engender deep trust in those whom they have been sent to assist.*** Sensuality It has long been believed that the Owl and the Hawk are closely connected and enjoy a symbiotic relationship. Each has dominion over a territory and share that realm, the Hawk akin to the Sun god Apollo who rules the day, with the Owl the counterpart of the Moon goddess Artemis who rules the night. In fact, most owls are nocturnal (meaning they are awake and active during the night) and Hawks are diurnal (active during daylight), so this mythological correlation is not far from reality. During the day, the Hawk flies throughout the territory, keeping the boundaries free of encroaching threat and trespassers while hunting for food. Hawk`s patrol of the territory is relinquished at dusk as he journeys to sleep, while Owl awakens to begin her night duties. In this manner, though they seldom (if ever) directly interact, Owl and Hawk are never the less closely linked to one another and their environment. ***Each distinctive member of the Owl family is thought to be a counterpart of the Hawk family, for Great Horned Owl, the counterpart is the Red-Tailed Hawk By looking at this member of the Hawk family, one with Great Horned Owl as a Totem may also gain some further insight as some of the keywords that apply to the Hawk will also ring familiar for this Owl as well. In the Red-Tail, the ~Kundalini~ energy is a powerful energy source that flows through that beautiful raptor. Some envision the Kundalini as a powerful sexual energy, yet to view its potential only thus, is to limit its true breadth and power of this fundamental energy, for it is then keeping that energy coiled at the base chakra (sexual center), rather than encouraging it to reach further and higher. At the time the energy is awoken, it begins to rise up through the other six energy centers (chakras). As it passes through each of these chakras, the lessons, issues and areas of our lives which are symbolized and or ~governed~ by these energy centers, are opened for our acknowledgment through the process of Conscious Awareness. Thus, when the Kundalini has completely uncoiled, its energy unfurled along the length of the spine and flowing easily through all seven energy points to emerge through the top (or ~Crown~) Chakra, a state of ~Enlightenment~ is experienced. Likewise for Horned Owl, the Kundalini energy may not be quite so strong or of such focus, yet there will none the less exist within the Owl Soul a deep sensuality that will need to find free expression. If this sensuality has been repressed due to early environmental conditioning, then there is a good likelihood that the individual with this Totem is not fully expressing themselves in other areas of their life as well. If such blocks from expressing themselves can be removed, the Great Owl Soul will truly begin to unfurl under the Light of self-acceptance and personal freedom, giving the soul wings with which to fly to newer heights of Self-Expression and releasing a deep power that will otherwise lay dormant, one of the key lessons that the counterpart of Hawk can bring to these wise souls. Harbinger of New Cycles Birds and Raptors are recognized in Earth Medicine as Messengers with the type of message and method through which these messages arrive, being unique to each specific breed. With the Great Horned Owl, it is believed that he/she arrives as a messenger heralding Change and New Cycles. Perhaps it is her close connection to the Moon with its constantly sifting and changing cycles that is at the root of this particular Medicine, but the fundamental power of this Owl`s ability to alert us to Change and Growth is highly significant when one learns to hear and listen to, the messages this beautiful and wizened creature brings. ***When one is blessed to have Great Horned Owl as one of their Primary Totems (Power, Theme or Mission), there will be an emphasis placed upon cycles and new beginnings. Frequently throughout the life of these individuals, circumstances will thrust upon the two-legged change that will often initially arrive (or be seen) as "forced." In reality, the changes occur as part of the process of growth and learning, a part of the process of continual renewal and rebirth, key components to New Cycles. If the Owl Soul resists such change, the consequences may be quite profound and often very painful, and this arrives to teach the Owl individual the importance of relinquishing control and embracing in faith, the change that is so much a part of their Earthwalk. In this way, each transition that later occurs in the life of these sensitive and perceptive individuals may then be embraced and seen for the opportunities of growth and evolution that they truly offer, rather than seen as a threat to their basic security. If this soul can tap into that intrinsic part of their fundamental nature that is excited and stimulated by such change, then they begin to realize their potential in a much broader and deeper sense and are willingly able to let go of models of behavior, thinking and feeling that have out served their usefulness, and step into the light of a new day. Once the one beside whom Owl flies embraces, with an eager and open mind/heart, the changes they will frequently face, this ability to recognize such transitions as a fundamental cornerstone of new life may be transmuted into assisting Others through their moments of upheaval and accelerated growth. This ability may be honed into one of intuitively picking up on when new cycles are beginning, and to then assist themselves (and their fellow humans) through the moment of transition that exists in the ~golden doorway~ which separates the old from the new. In this manner, the Owl soul fully embraces the Medicine of Harbinger of New Cycles, and aligns him/herself with the beauty of their Life Path.*** Clairaudience One of the physical characteristics that easily distinguishes the Great Horned Owl from other members of the Owl family, are the tufts of feathers that resemble ears or "horns." These remarkable feathers that sets this Owl apart, are the reason for the Great Horned Owls namesake. It has not been clearly established whether these feathers are merely adornments to attract mates, or if they serve a biological function such as increasing and/or filtering sounds as they travel through the air and to this beautiful birds ears. Regardless of their function (if any), these feathers create a signature appearance for the Great Horned Owl that is also closely linked to his/her Medicine of Clairaudience. ***For the two-legged beside whom Great Horned Owl flies, there will be an inherent focus on communication in all forms, but as good as these individuals are at speaking and writing, they will also make excellent listeners. These souls are the best of friends, providing a listening ear and excellent advice that is based in their own rich experiences. Likewise, music is deeply stirring to the Horned Owl Soul and they can often elicit healing experiences for themselves by listening to some favorite music, or (if there are other creative Totems that travel beside them) they will be gifted themselves in musical endeavors. This responsiveness to sound is a reflection of the Horned Owl`s elongated head feathers that resemble ears, and hence much of life is processed through what these individuals hear. Often, they will pick up subtle voice inflections and tones that will alert them to when another is attempting to decieve them though the process may be so quick and automatic that they may not even be aware of this acuity. Another form that this ability to "tune in" takes on is Clairaudience. Where a Clairvoyant can often see other realms, alternate futures and realities, spirits and all manner of that which unseen to the average two-legged eyes, a Clairaudient will have the ability to hear messages that will elude Others. This ability may be somewhat startling for those Owl individuals who develop this talent later in life, rather than are born with it, as often the Gift will arrive out of as a result of an accident or a by-product of delving into spiritual and mystical philosophy. In the instances where the individual has been born with this talent, there is not so much trauma attached to the talent, but for those to whom the blessing of Clairaudience comes later in life, naturally the emergence of this gift can be quite alarming. Much stigma has been attached to individuals who "hear the voices" of departed relatives, spirit guides and others who speak across planes, with accusations ranging from "fantasy" to schizophrenia being leveled against individuals who are often fearful of coming forward and acknowledging such unique abilities. So long as no medical or psychological factors are the key behind the sounds and voices heard, the Great Horned Owl would do well to acknowledge and heartily embrace this Gift, for it has been given by the Great Mystery for a reason. If the talent has remained thus far dormant, then it may be that the Soul beside whom Great Horned Owl flies still receives messages, yet instead of "hearing" the words spoken, the messages will arrive in the form of vivid dreams and strong intuition. By embracing this talent with a humble acceptance and enthusiasm to be of service to his/her fellow two-legged, the Great Horned Owl soul matures fully into their unique and mystical heritage.*** |

Otter Medicine Female Energy The medicine held by Otter is a set of lessons in female energy. This applies to both men and women, as all of us have female sides. The Otter's hide is very often used to make medicine bags for powerful women because it represents balanced female energy. Otter is very caring of its young and will play for hours, performing all types of acrobatics. It lives on land but always has its home on water. The elements of Earth and Water are the female elements. At home in both of these elements, Otter is the personification of femininity: long, sleek and graceful , Otter is the true coquette of the animal world. Otter is always on the move and very curious. Unlike other animals, Otter will not start a fight unless it is attacked first. This joyful little creature is adventuresome and assumes that all other creatures are friendly, until proven otherwise. These character traits are the beauty of a balanced female side, the side of ourselves that creates a space for others to enter our lives without preconceptions or suspicions. Otter teaches us that balanced female energy is not jealous or catty. It is sisterhood, content to enjoy and share the good fortune of others. Anchored in the understanding that all accomplishments are good for the whole tribe, Otter people express joy for others. Long ago, in tribal law, if a woman were widowed, her sister would offer her own husband to the widow as a lover to keep her from drying up and not using her creative urges. This is Otter's medicine, too. Envy, or the fear of being replaced, has no space in Otter's balanced understanding of sharing goodness. Woman energy without games or control is a beautiful experience. It is the freeness of love without jealousy. It is the joy of loving other people's children and their accomplishments as much as you love your own. It may be time to examine your feelings about sharing the bounty of your life with others. Otter may be saying that the finer qualities of woman need to be striven for in both men and women so that a unity of spirit can be achieved. This would involve the destruction of jealously and of all the acts of anger which stem from that fear. It would mean keeping a Hawk-eye on your ego and maintaining total trust. It would mean a world full of people coming together to honor the right of each person to be. Teachings of the Otter Keynote: Joy, Playfulness, and Sharing Cycle Of Power: Spring and Summer Otters are aquatic carnivore found worldwide except in Australia, New Zealand, and Antarctica. In the common species distributed throughout Europe and Asia, the body may attain a length of 75 cm (30 in), with a tail half as long as the body. The head is broad and flat, with short, rounded ears; the blunt snout bears lateral, slit-like nostrils. The ears and nostrils can be closed when the animal is diving. The fur is chestnut, the legs are short but strong, and the webbed feet have claws. A similar species is found in North America. It is about three and a half feet in length and can weigh from ten to fifteen pounds. Otters live in dens, usually by the side of water and with an underwater entrance to the den. They feed on fish and also on small mammals, birds, frogs, and crayfish. The animals breed in the spring, and authorities have reported a gestation period of about 61 days for the species already mentioned. Development still lasts only two months, however, since almost no development occurs between mating and the time when the fertilized eggs are implanted in the uterus. The litters range from one to five pups, which stay with the mother for about a year. Otters are of both fresh water and sea species. They love to frolic in water, often sliding down banks into streams or ponds in play. Otters can stay under water for up to four minutes. They are playful, friendly, curious about everything and enjoy life. Otters remind us to keep the inner child alive or to give birth to it. They remind us that life can be fun if we approach it with the right attitude. They are seldom seen alone. They are most often with others or playing with an object of some kind. The adult otter has practically no natural enemies. They protect their young very well. They are agile and fast in the water, with the ability to out-swim fish. If there is a threat, they usually swim away fast, but they can be ferocious fighters. The mother otter usually chases the father out of the den when the young are born, again reflecting the otters tie to primordial feminine and mothering energies and patterns. When the young are out and about, the father is allowed to rejoin. Sometimes otters show up to help awaken these primal energies and responsibilities. It can indicate a need to set up boundaries within the home and define your feminine role. Because the otter can adopt postures which are considered unusual in animals, it is regarded as something of a mimic. The otter was an important cult animal in ancient Peru and, for some reason paired with the ocelot. The Ainu of Japan, however, think the otter forgetful and wasteful. To the Celts, the otter was a very magickal creature; it accompanied the god Cernunnos. Native Americans said the symbolized female energy because it lived in both the Earth and Water Elements. This energy could be used by both men and women. However, they also called it a Trickster being. The otters hide is very often used to make medicine bags for powerful women because it represents balanced female energy. Otter is the personification of femininity; long, sleek and graceful. Long ago, in tribal law, if a woman were widowed, her sister would offer her own husband to the widow as a lover to keep her from drying up and not using her creative urges. This too, is otter medicine. Envy, or the fear of being replaced, has no space in otters balanced understanding of sharing goodness. Woman energy without games or control is a beautiful experience. It is the freeness of love without jealousy. It is the joy of loving other people’s children and their accomplishments as much as you love your own. If otter has shown up in your life, it may be time to find some play time. Involve yourself in some creative activity. You don’t have to be good at it, just have fun with it. Then again, maybe you are being too playful. Are you having trouble staying focused? Are you afraid to have fun? Maybe you are worrying too much or being too serious. Do you need to awaken your inner child? Treat yourself to something special. Honor otter and it will teach you not only how to have fun, but it will reawaken a new sense of wonder at life and all things within it. It may be time to examine your feelings about sharing the bounty of your life with others. Otter may be saying that the finer qualities of women need to be striven for in both men and women so that a unity of spirit can be achieved. This would involve the destruction of jealousy and of all the acts of anger which stem from that fear. It would mean keeping a hawk-eye on your ego and maintaining total trust. It would mean a world full of people coming together to honor the right of each person to "be". Those born during the second moon of the year, the Rest and Cleansing Moon, from January 20th to February 18th, have the otter as their totem animal and are usually friendly, helpful, playful and bold. Their spirit of helpfulness is such that they often engage themselves in charitable activities. The emphasis of their lives is service. They are considerate and many of their life experiences will present ways in which their energies can be directed to the benefit of the Earth and its inhabitants. Should this be blocked for whatever reason, or should they allow themselves to become too self centered, they are likely to become miserable and morose. Just as the otter is one of the great organizers of the animal kingdom, so Otter people excel at running things in the human kingdom. And just as the otter keeps the water in which it lives very clean, Otter people also require cleanliness and orderliness in both their home and working environment; otherwise they feel uncomfortable and ill at ease. have the otter as their totem in the animal kingdom. People of this totem are like the otter in that they seem to feel that is it their duty to keep other humans in good grace in the eyes of the world. They are visionary and humanitarian, often spending much of their time and energy in searching for ways in which they can help their fellow humans. They truly enjoy being of service to people and dreaming of new ways in which they can be of service. Magickal Attributes: Finding inner treasures or talent; faithfulness; gaining wisdom; the ability to recover from a crisis. Brings good luck and good health. This joyful little creature is adventuresome and assumes that all other creatures are friendly . . until proven otherwise. This teaches humans to create a space for others to enter our lives without preconceptions or suspicions. Chant Slipping, sliding, soft fur gliding Through the forest water bright. The Orca The Orca is found in all seas from the Arctic to the Antarctic. The familiar black and white coloring of the Orca is significant. From a spiritual point of view it represents lessons of a soul nature regarding polarity. Orcas assist us in acquiring balance within a world of opposites. From a physical point of view it is a strategy of camouflage. Seen from above their dark back blends in with the darker water below them, while from below, their whiter bellies blend in with the sunlit waters above. This symbolizes the ability to move through life seen or unseen depending on the situation. Learning the art of camouflage is advantageous for those with this medicine. Proper action and reaction, observation and expression are all linked to this art. The orca swims in formation either in a line or in rows. This indicates good organizational skills and the ability to work cooperatively with others. Orcas do not migrate in the same sense as baleen whales, but have seasonal movements which are tied into prey movement and environmental changes. Two distinct sub groups of the orca are described as resident and transients. Residents live in larger pods and have a matriarchal system in which two or three females and their descendants live together throughout their lives. Transient groups tend to travel longer distances and are known to hunt and kill other mammals. The name killer whale originated when whalers and mariners observed transient orcas eating other whales. Each pod has its own distinctive dialect which allow members of the same pod to recognize one another even if they get separated. Those with this medicine are able to instantly identify members of their original soul group. Although personalities may differ a strong sense of family is known. Life lessons as well as spiritual aspirations are similar. Reuniting with members of the same soul group can trigger a sense of great joy or it can awaken heart felt grief as memories surface about a previous loss. Those with this totem should remember that once a reunion has been established, emotional support for one another will always be available. Orca medicine people are very creative although they can have a tendency to keep their creativity hidden or allow their creativity to rule their lives. Those with this totem should pay attention to the way in which the orca appears to them. If it is seen breaching out of the water it is asking you to surface from the depths of your inner reflection and express yourself outwardly in a grounded and creative way. If seen injured or beached it could indicate a need to take care of your health. Orcas often get parasites, bacterial and fungal infections. Hodgkin's disease has been recorded in killer whales. From an emotional perspective this disease is linked to low self esteem and the fear of being accepted. The orca holds the teachings of fearlessness, beauty, power and balance. It can awaken these same qualities within you. All you need to do is ask. Bibliography: Sayada and Animal Speak |

The Ostrich Keynote: Becoming Grounded Cycle of Power: Year Round The ostrich is the largest bird known to man and unlike others birds it cannot fly. This is very symbolic. Flight signifies new and uncharted territory. Because the ostrich cannot fly it gathers most of its wisdom from the earth walk. Almost half of its height is its neck. Because the neck symbolizes a link between heaven and earth, the ostrich can teach us how to use our physical capabilities to work with that of the ethereal mental realm in a practical and grounded way. The ostrich is a bird that can help you to take knew knowledge out of the ethereal mental realm and apply it practically. The ostrich has an ambiguous role in mythology. The Egyptians venerated the ostrich. Its feathers were a symbol of Maat, the goddess of truth and justice and were used in the judgment hall of Osiris to weigh the heart of the deceased. Ostrich feathers were worn in headpieces of goddesses who upheld the virtues of truth and fairness. This bird has excellent eyesight and can detect the undetectable. Very little gets past the ostrich's keen perception. This can be both a blessing and a curse for those with this totem. The ostrich's eyes are actually bigger than their brains. In man this symbolizes a tendency towards dreamy flaky thoughts. Using common sense is advised. Some cultures believed the ostrich possessed clairvoyant abilities and worshipped it. Others were afraid of this all seeing bird. Those with this medicine have the uncanny ability to know the truth of any situation. They are not easily fooled by others. Learning how to use knowledge in a non threatening way is one of the challenges an ostrich medicine person faces. The ostrich can go without water for long periods. Their diet consists mostly of plant matter although some meat is taken in. They have been known to swallow stones, pieces of iron and other such debris without it affecting their digestive system. Any bird that does this usually indicates a need for you to assimilate knowledge before acting on it. Those with this totem have hardy constitutions and can eat almost anything without causing major physical problems. A healthy diet is recommended however. Their healthy appetite reflects an appetite for greater knowledge. The Ostrich relies on its strong legs and feet, uniquely two-towed, with the main toe developed almost like a hoof to escape its enemies. The feet is how humans stay connected to the earth which reflects the idea to stay grounded. Frightened ostrich can achieve speeds of 40 miles per hour. If cornered it can deliver dangerous kicks. The ostrich is a visible bird. To escape detection from enemies, chicks and adults may lie on the ground, necks outstretched with heads buried in the sand. This habit gave rise to the legend that they bury their head in sand when danger threatens. If the ostrich appears to you in this position it is asking you to become less visible, less vulnerable and protect yourself in some way. He often seen walking amongst zebras and antelopes. The animals stir up insects and other food for the ostrich. They both serve to warn each other of predators as well. If you have a ostrich as a totem, it would be beneficial to study the zebra and antelope as well, as they are often companion animals. Bibliography: Sayada and Animal Speak |
