Sympathetic magick

The idea of sympathetic magick is that when something is done to one thing a sympathetic reaction will happen in another thing. The term sympathetic magic was first coined in the book the golden bough.

Frazier was concerned with cataloging the magical beliefs of people that he viewed as being more primitive in their beliefs. He did such a good job of cataloging that his work became a staple among the magical communities. The work falls short however in the fact that he did not believe in magic himself and didn't look at the natural extensions of sympathetic magic.

Law of contagion: Once together always together. This law provides a link between a piece and the whole, as well as providing a link between things that have been kept in proximity. This magic allows a caster who has one thing that is a piece of another thing to act upon it.
For this law to have any meaning then the physical world must have some significance to the spiritual world. The reason for this is that if the physical world and the spiritual world were not to have any contact then acting upon an object by means of magic could not happen.

Additionally, if acting upon something were to have any effect on something that used to be connected to it, then the physical connection must serve as the basis for the spiritual one.
When using the law of contagion it is important to take something that is a definite part of the original. In other words it is not good enough to place something on something else to consider them connected. The piece taken must have been with, or a part of, the whole for a significant period of time. If this is not done then the connection may be too tenuous for any useful purpose.
Contagious magic is best used in conjunction with other forms of magic as it allows the contagion connection to build upon connections made by other forms of magic. Pressing human hair into a clay doll that is designed to imitate the subject of a magic spell would be a good example of this. The human hair provides a spiritual link but does not necessarily provide a good mental model for working upon. The model provides a physical model to work upon.
The law of contagion can be useful even when you are not working on another person. It is often suggested that tarot cards be placed near their owner while they sleep. The reason for this is that the continued proximity allows for the reader to form a link with their cards. So long as the reader is the one to use the cards they will gain a stronger impression from the cards because of this.

Law of similarity: One thing that imitates another can act upon the other. Like produces like. This law is useful for use in magic without other links. The law of similarity makes use of the symbol and image recognition that the human brain takes to naturally.
This law is another in a long series of magical forms that are hard wired into the human brain. Humans naturally form mental links between similar things. It is therefore quite easy to use this mental link to form a spiritual link between similar forms.
Primarily this law serves to establish a mental framework to place links from one object to another. The spell caster takes an object that is similar to his target and spiritually superimposes it upon the actual object. Once established, a spiritual link from the object to the model will remain for use. The form allows for the spiritual link to be fine tuned to specific physical portions of the target.
In ancient demon exorcisms it was often useful to create an image of the offending demon to attack. The creation of the object and its destruction were not enough on their own. A link between the model and the target had to be established in such a way that the target could be attacked by attacking the model.
This law is similar to the law of signatures, however there are important differences. The law of signatures in alchemy is designed to help the alchemist identify things that can be used for alchemical purposes. The law of similarity however is designed to allow the spell caster to form new links between similar objects.
Law of vessels: A suitable object may be used to house the essence of another thing. A spiritual force may choose to take up residence in something that it chooses as a suitable vessel for its presence. This vessel is not required for the existence of the spiritual presence. It serves simply as a home.
This law is a natural extension of sympathetic magic. The original presentation of these laws in the golden bough did not take into account that the magic that was being catalogued might in actuality work. The law of vessels might therefore be considered to be on the flip side of the coin from the law of similarity. Instead of a caster creating an object to act upon a subject, the subject chooses to use an object that the caster created in order to interact with the caster.
In ancient cultures images were created of gods. The purpose of these idols was not to act upon the god, but to allow the god to more comfortably accept the offerings of their worshipers. These ancient worshipers did not simply work with their deities like some might today. They actually worshiped them and treated them with honor and respect.
Though on the surface this does not sound like it would be a directly useful law it does lend itself to a few important applications. The crafter of the items can use them to communicate with forces outside of themselves. They can also invite protective essences into objects similar in purpose to gargoyles. They can even use items to house their own essence when such a vessel proves useful.
The concept of inviting communion with essences through idols is not a new one, but not all good ideas need to be new. The benefits to the caster are obvious, however there are also benefits to the essences that take up residence in the vessel. If the vessel is a deity, then they can be more directly given offerings and other such luxury items for example.
Protective talismans and guardians such as gargoyles are common the world round. At the dawn of history the Sumerians used carvings of Imdugud birds to protect their doorways. Gargoyles were used to protect Christian holy temples. Fu dogs are still used to this day to protect the entrances of homes. It is in the nature of some entities to act as protectors in the same way that it is in the nature of cats to hunt small mice. The statue that they choose to use to house their essence is simply a comfortable place to call home.
Using a vessel to house your own essence is simple. All that it requires is an appropriate image and the ability to form a link between yourself and the image. Once this is accomplished the vessel can be used to house your presence continually. The uses depend on the situation, but to use another Sumerian example, the vessel can be used to give continual worship and service to the vessel of a god.

Law of substitution: One thing can replace or transfer a property to its equivalent. This law extends the scope of the other laws by allowing physical objects to transfer purely insubstantial properties between one another. In essence what this law does is it allows a spiritual property of one thing to be transplanted to something that is able to house it.
By transferring the sins of the group to an animal they can be carried away. Traditionally this animal is called a scapegoat, but other substitutes have been found by other cultures for various purposes throughout recorded history. What is important in each case is that the vessel for the substituted property be appropriate for the intended use.

Associative magic In many cases it is thought that a thing can become magical, or spiritually enhanced, by associating with something that is already magical. A quantity of water can be added to holy water and the whole of the water will remain holy. A quantity of water can be taken away and the water in each portion is holy. To create holy water one uses prayer or ritual to associate water with a god.
At first associative magic seems totally invalid. After all couldn’t you simply associate an entire ocean with a god by pouring water into that ocean? This form of magic has no conservation of magic laws. In other words there is no limit to how many things can become magical from one small source of magic.
The explanation comes when you examine the nature of most root sources of magic. The enchanter or artificer might create the root artifact by virtue of associating it with a god. Since holy water is the example we are using then the god has no reason to grant even a small portion of their power on an item used by a nonbeliever.
This brings up another interesting point about associative magic. As more associations are made the primary source grows more powerful. Off hand I can think of two reasons that this would be. The first recognizes that the primary source is associated with a god. If a god’s attention is drawn to items connected to a single source then it seems reasonable that the god would grant the source item more power. The second explanation rejects divine intervention. In essence this explanation postulates that everyone who has an item connected to a source item is actually giving the source item power through the association rather than the other way around. If this second explanation works then an item only draws from a source item at first and thereafter it is actually the holder of the item that gives it the power it has.
This second explanation would make the power of a magical item nontransferable. In other words an artifact could not be given to someone new, as the original association would not be there for him or her. I try to shy away from this explanation, as it seems like a contrived way to go into denial as to the existence of supernatural beings.
In ancient Babylon a form of associative magic was used in exorcisms. The Babylonians knew that the ancient Sumerians before them had incantations that could be used to exorcise demons. They then created talismans that were associated to the original incantations. These talismans often had illegible texts on them as the artificers of those items were often illiterate. The talismans weren’t meant to be read, but rather they were meant to have innate power.
This was made possible by several of the forms of sympathetic magic. In some cases a magical item gives its ability to another item by the power of the law of contagion. In other instances the law of substitution is more important in its ability to allow the transfer of properties from one thing to another.
Associative magic is magic for the masses. It is not all that difficult to get a holy relic, but it is difficult to create one completely from scratch.

You don’t need to read to create an association, and you only need a rudimentary understanding of the spiritual significance of the item to make use of it.
This form of magic has one major weakness though. If the primary source becomes invalid then every item that has been made magical by that primary source looses its power. To protect the magic of an item that you use then you have to protect the primary source of magic or you have to associate the item with another primary source

Sympathetic Magick is the use of objects, places, timings and Correspondances to perform or enhance our Magickal Techniques!

Most forms of Magick utilize some form of Sympathetic Magick, using items that have a certain similarity (or sympathy) to the task we wish to achieve (either in reality or from their Correspondances!<WBR>) In fact, apart from direct energy work and Astral Travel virtually all other forms of Magick make use of the Sympathetic element!
Most folks consider Sympathetic Magick to be merely Candle and Poppet Magick, believing Spellcrafting to be a separate entity entirely, but the fact remains when we use Correspondances we are utilizing Sympathetic Magick in one form or another. This applies equally to Crystal usage the use of Magickal Tools using colours, scents, herbs, etc.
Anyhow, please find below some basics on Candle Magick, Poppet Magick, Bindings and the use of Elements in Magick! Hope they are of some use in your own Magickal workings!

Candle Magick

The physical act of lighting the candle is something performed by many of all faiths, to send a plea for help or to remember a loved one no longer upon this plane. The Catholic Church utilizes this just as much as we do, with the lighting of candles and a prayer being one way to send a Blessing unto others (bet that most Catholics aren't aware they're performing Magick though! :-)
In Wicca, we light a Candle as part of many Rituals and Spells, from honouring our Deities and the Elements that we invite to witness/guard our Circle, through to the simple Candle Magick Spell, where a candle is lit to send energy to a loved one that has a need. Taking the time out to do a small candle magick ritual is a way to connect to the All, and try to help others for the good of all.
There's lots of different ways of doing it, some just light the candle, thinking on the name or face of the person that is needing help, others do something a bit more complex, possibly anointing the candle, maybe inscribing it with a rune for health or the persons need and the candles intent, yet others more may just choose to make a positive statement (either verbally or mentally) that the energy they are sending will go to 'so and so' for them to use for 'such and such' (or for whatever they need the energy for). You could make it a small rhyme, or just say what comes into your head, being spontaneous and speaking from the heart sometimes works better than pre-planned and pre-written things.

Usually you'd allow the candle burn out, concentrating on it either for a few moments or for as long as you feel you need for the message of help to be sent out and the energy accumulated to reach and succour the need. But you could just let it burn for as long as you wished, then extinguish it with a snuffer (don't blow it out, as this commingles the air and fire elements and can be considered an insult to the elements by some), perhaps saying a further little rhyme to seal the power on it's way! Some will then bury the Spell candle within the Earth (or drop it into running water, or bury beneath a potted plane!), thus allowing all of the energy from the Candle to be utilized, others will just store the Candle safely till they have a need of utilizing it again!

Whatever feel right for yourself is ok! The physical act of lighting the candle is something to give you a focus, allowing you to feel the problems that others are having, and allowing you to give a little
Energy back to those that are in need and may need some assistance.
As to colours, healing colours include Blue, Green and Brown, and other colour have other correspondances that may also help, but if nothing else, then use a white candle (even a tea light!), as this can be substituted for any other colour when necessary. I'd definitely suggest you cleanse, charge and consecrate the candle prior to use though this may be done in advance and the cleansed/charged candles then stored until needed if preferred!

As to whether you light one candle or several (one for each with a need) the choice is up to you, whatever feels right is best! Some may feel that they need an individual focus for each with a need, especially if not used to working with energy, others will just light one and use that as a focus, stating their intent and whom the energy should go out to. Remember though, that the candle isn't the energy, it is a tool, and as such is a nothing more than a focus point for your intent, giving the mind something to concentrate upon and as you progress and grow in experience and knowledge you may well find that you do not need a physical candle at all!

Another couple of methods I've come across are to use a Cauldron of Intent, either physically or mentally, either writing down what they wish to achieve and placing this paper in their Cauldron and then burning the paper to send the energy on it's way, or mentally putting the problem (or even the person themselves) into their Cauldron and allowing the healing to work. And lastly to use a healing fountain, as per Marion Weinstein's Earth Magick, visualizing a castle where she works her actual Magick, and placing the person needing help into the Healing Fountain to heal. What ever works for you is your correct method, and the only limit on finding your own individual way of working is that of the limit of your own imagination!

You may find that whilst doing the Spell the candle flares up, and in some instances I'd accept that this was a sign that Energy was definitely present, and that you were directing it (either consciously or unconsciously) into the Candle and thus into the purpose for which you were doing the Candle Magick Spell! Tis something that I've experienced a few times (but rarely), and just cos it doesn't happen again doesn't mean that the Spell isn't going to work, but rather that at this particular time and place the Energy was high and you were being given a sign that things were going to happen with this Spell by the Goddess and God! Alternatively, it could just have been some contamination within the Candle itself that was causing it to flare, or that the wick was in need of trimming (the rational explanation), but if this were so, that doesn't mean that it wasn't a sign, for how would you have 'known' to pick that candle, and how was it that it came to be contaminated (or to flare up at the right times) in the first place unless something guided you to it! A sure sign of some forces working to guide your hands (be it the Goddess and God, synchronicity or your own natural abilities reaching out and grasping what you needed at the time!)

Poppet Magick

Poppet Magick is a form of Sympathetic Magick where you utilize a Poppet (doll, image, etc) to represent another who for whatever reason cannot be present, and this Poppet the plays a part in your Ritual / Spell, in the beliefs that whatever is cast upon the Poppet will also affect the person it is meant to represent.
The traditional image of a Voodoo Doll is the immediate concept that springs to most of our minds when thinking of Poppets, but in reality, Wiccans don't stick pins, needles, drip wax upon effigies or burn them to bring harm to our enemies! Most Wiccans are of a mindset where those that they have found to have brought them harm (in whatever form) have merely been the conduit of a Life Lesson that we were meant to learn at that time, and usually we'll bear them no ill will (even going so far in some cases as to thank the offending person for the lesson they taught us about ourselves!)
Poppets are generally fashioned from fabric (though I've come accross folks using paper and card myself in the past), folded in half and cut to follow a rough human form outline before being sewn around the edges to form a small representation of the person they were intended to represent (generally the head is left un-sewn until the Poppet is stuffed and ready to be charged and used, usually within Circle.)

Features may be drawn or sewn on, clothing may be fashioned or not, how crude or true a representation you wish it to be is entirely up to yourself! Once ready the Poppet is taken into the Circle, stuffed with herbs (corresponding to the intent of the Spell that is to be used) and fabric, then the final part sewn up and the Poppet cleansed and charged before being presented to the Deities as a representation of whom it is to represent. Once presented the Spell may then be cast upon the Poppet, and the Poppet stored safely until such a time as the Spell has come to fruition, when you may choose to give it to the person that it was made to represent or deconstruct it, burying the remains safely away.
As with all Magickal working, bear in mind the Rede and the Law of Three, for if you use Poppet Magick for ill, (or even just without permission of the person for whom you are casting the Spell), then it may well return to you threefold!

Binding, Cord & String Magick

Bindings! Probably the one type of Witches Spell that all Newcomers have heard about! The one most likely to cause heated debates amongst Wiccans and other Pagans! A Binding Spell is one cast for the purpose of 'Binding' (or stopping, preventing, etc) yourself or another person from performing an action, or to prevent an event from happening. As such they are the subject of endless debate as to whether they contravene the Rede or not, as to prevent another from exercising their own free will is a form of control, something most Wiccans will shy away from doing. In cases of deliberate self-harm, stalking, violence to others or lawbreaking, many folks do feel that they should intervene using whatever methods they have available, others (like myself) are more cautious, looking at possible results and karmic backlashes before they decide what they wish to do. In the last analysis it is up to the practitioner themselves to decide whether they may use a Binding and take the possible consequences, or not! Only the individual can truly make that decision!
Some forms of Binding may be performed upon the self, binding negative actions or tendencies that you have gives you a focus to attempt to deal with them, binding your own bad habits may also help to bolster your own willpower, thus making it easier to loose weight, give up smoking or whatever else you feel is a personal weakness.
Bindings may be done using string, cords or ribbons, and may take many differing forms! Some will write down in letter form that wish they wish to bind, giving their reasons and thoughts on the subject, then folding or rolling up the letter and binding it with a ribbon, others may take an object to represent the trait they wish to bind (or even a Poppet) and then bind this with cord, string or ribbon (for instance, if you suffer with saying inappropriate things at the wrong time, you may wish to bind your loose tongue! This could be done by assembling a Poppet, then tying a ribbon around it's mouth, thus effectively Binding it!) Others will just use a cord and empower it with their desires, knotting it in a special way to bind in the desire, then releasing the knots as their goal is reached! (A good one to loose weight, take a cord, divide into 9 and knot at these intervals. You may wear the cord around a wrist, leave where it will be seen everyday or leave upon your Altar.

As you reach 1/9th of your weight loss target unknot one knot, repeating each time you reach one of the milestones until you have unknotted them all and are at your ideal weight! Note - you must also take the correct actions in the mundane world, such as exercise and watching your diet for this to work, Magick can help but should not be used as a substitute for healthier living!)
This is something I was sent via email once upon a long ago, and describes the process of tying the knots perfectly! Hope it is of some use!
Take a cord of the appropriate colour for your purpose (same as candle colors). Consecrate it through the elements in turn, then hold it till you have empowered it with your intent. Next, tie a secure knot in the centre of the cord, concentrating on the reason for the spell as you do so.
When this is done say, "I've knotted one, the spell's begun."

Go now to one end of the cord and say, "I've knotted two, it cometh true".

Remember to affirm your intention mentally with each knot.

The words for the remaining sequence of knots are, " I've tied three, so will it be;

I've tied four, it's strength is more;

I've tied five, it comes alive;

I've tied six, the spell to fix;

I've tied seven, the stars of heaven;

I've tied eight, and seal it's fate;

I've tied nine, and make it mine."

There are minor variations on these words, but this is the basis of traditional cord magic. When you have done your cord spell you can put it in a special box on your shrine, wear it, or bury it.

Some authorities suggest untying the knots once the spell has worked. Sometimes, however, the spell is ongoing and then I find it best to leave the cord alone and forget about it.
One of the useful features of Cord, String, Ribbon Magick is that when the Spell is over, or you have no more need for it, you can end the Spell simply by untying the knots, utilizing a rhyme as you do so if you wish!

Earth Magick

This is Magick utilizing the powers of the Earth Element, using the correspondances of stability, wisdom, strength, growth, prosperity, business and fertility. Magick may be performed by actually using the Earth Element itself (such as burying a note or request, using a crystal or stone), using one of it's Correspondances calling upon the Earth Elementals (Gnomes) or by utilizing a Visualization involving the Element in your Magickal workings. Only your own imagination limits you as to how you may use the Powers of Earth!
A few ideas I've thought of (and used myself) could involve writing down those aspects you wish to gain control of in order to grow in any of the corresponding areas that are represented by the Earth (strength, wisdom, stability, prosperity, etc) and then placing this note or letter underneath a heavy stone upon your Altar, in the hopes it will squash your own negative tendencies and allow you to grow further until you have no further need of the Stone weight to keep them in check.
You may also wish to utilize your Pentagram in the practice of Earth Magick, using it as a grounding stone, for protection or however else you find springs to your mind!

Air Magick

Air magick is one that most find difficult to bring into their Magickal workings, Air being such an intangible element, but there are techniques that all may use if they wish. The Air Element has the Correspondances of new life and possibilities for travel, instruction, finding lost items, and freedom, and can also be used as a metaphor for the intellect, thus working with Air may enhance your powers of deduction and reasoning. You may wish to use Air in the form of Incense, utilizing this within other Spells or alone to 'smudge' yourself for cleansing or with a certain corresponding type of Incense to bring that power into your life.
The Athame is the Tool most associated with the Air Element, and can be used in a variety of ways, drawing powers and attributes down unto ourselves. The uses of the Air Element can also be used to remove our sorrows, writing them on a piece of paper that is then attached to either a Kite or Helium filled Balloon, which is then released from a high vantage point on a windy day, in the hopes this will carry the sorrows away with it. Again, the uses of Air can only be limited by your own imagination!

Fire Magick

Probably the easiest of the Elements for most to think of ways to use during Magick, Fire has the abilities to purify, heal (by removing the negative) and to help in breaking bad habits. It can also help bring closure to past events and has the distinct Correspondances of working with your creativity, motivation, will powers, drive, sex and sensuality. For healing, purification, sex, breaking bad habits or illness you may wish to utilize Candle Magick, or to burn a representation of (or letter about) that which you need to remove.
Always take care when working with the Fire Element that it does not get out of control, keep something handy to douse flames (especially when burning paper or parchment, I've personally seen paper burn for a very long time, even whilst floating on water!) and make sure you are working upon a fireproof surface! This applies even more so if you are working outdoor, it may be glorious to share a Ritual in the wilderness, and to have a fire, but make sure it is safe, and is thoroughly extinguished before you leave, having a forest fire on your conscience isn't something you really want (nor is the karmic backlash that it could also bring!). You may also use your Wand or Staff to call upon the Powers of the Fire Element, or even call upon the Fire Elementals (Salamanders) to help you achieve your desired results!

Water Magick

As with Fire, the ever present Water Element is another that most find easy to work into their Magickal Life! Friendships, marriage, happiness, fertility, healing, pleasures, psychic ability are all governed by the Water Element It's powers may be used for Scrying (in a Cauldron or mirror - which is said to be a representation of water), as a means of carrying away unwanted memories and negativity (write down your thoughts / concerns upon a piece of paper, make it into a paper boat and place it in running water, allowing it to take your worries away, or take a bath or shower, and visualize the water washing all your negatives off from you. When you get out allow all your worries and negativity to stay in the water and be washed down the plug hole!).
The Chalice is the Tool connected most with the Element of Water, and can be used in many ways to call upon the Power of the Element of Water. One particularly good way I've come accross is that of pouring water into your Chalice, and projecting all the negativities in your life into the water, then emptying it onto the Ground! Once this is then done, refill the Chalice with water, this time visualizing all the positives that you wish to invite into your life as being contained within the Chalice, then drink the Water.
