Leaving the Darkness Spell
Color of the day: Purple Incense of the day: Apricot
Depression is never a good thing. Amaterasu retreated into a cave in despair and perhaps you have, too. Time for a change. You will need a dark colored candle, a white candle, and a lighter. Draw the drapes in your room. Stand before your altar and light the dark candle. Watch the flame and imagine it filled with all your suffering, doubts, and frustration. Breathe in deep. Say, “I extinguish this darkness from my life.?Blow out the candle. As the smoke dissipates, imagine the dark things in your life fading away as well. Take a deep breath. Light the white candle. Say, “I welcome the light back into my life.?Take the candle and, in a clockwise direction, open your curtains and windows. Move from room to room, expelling the darkness and letting the Sun shine in. When you have finished, extinguish the candle, but leave it on your altar for twenty-four hours. Break the dark candle into pieces and bury it.

Lammas Corn Dolly
Color of the day: Orchid Incense of the day: Ginger
Lammas, the first of the harvest Sabbats, was traditionally celebrated with fresh bread and beer. At the heart of any harvest holiday is gratitude and generosity. We give thanks for the bounty in our lives and we share our bounty with others. The Lammas practice of making corn dollies dates back to ancient times when the Romans first introduced cultivation to the tribes of northern Europe. Made from the last sheaf of grain, the dolly was paraded through the village and treated with reverence or derision, depending on the tribe. Eventually the corn dolly became the good luck talisman for every farm. To make your corn dolly, gather together long stems of wheat, corn husks, dried alfalfa, or, if you’re a city dweller, raffia. Fashion either an abstract figure or a more doll-shaped figure depending on your sensibilities. Likewise, the corn dolly can be left simple or dressed in cloth, feathers, and beads. Pass the dolly through the smoke of your ritual fire to bless her. Ask her to protect your household from theft, poverty, illness, and disaster. Your last year’s corn dolly, if you have one, should be tossed in the fire with prayers of gratitude for a year’s worth of good fortune. Blessed Be.

Lavender Clearing Spell
Color of the day: Turquoise Incense of the day: Nutmeg
This is a good time of year to go through your house, cleaning closets and ridding yourself of possessions that have outgrown their usefulness. Bag all those items that can be recycled or given away. Now, take several sprigs of lavender for purification and place them in a bowl in the center of your altar. Light two white candles. Run your fingers through the herb and say: “Lavender, lavender, bring us contentment.?BR>Repeat this until you feel your energy transfer to the herb. Pour one cup of boiling water over the enchanted sprigs, then cover the bowl as the herb steeps. When it has cooled, strain it and sprinkle drops of the infusion over those areas you’ve cleaned out. Visualize your life this autumn as a peaceful, happy time. Sprinkle the infusion over your discarded items. Visualize your possessions bringing happiness and use to their new owners.

LORDS OF AIR SPELL When we say that something is ëin the airí or ëblowing in the windí we mean that it is available, or likely to happen. One of the many ways to make a wish is to literally put the wish into the wind. Nearly every human culture has had gods who rule the element of Air. Examples include wind gods such as Aeolus (Greek), Skan (Native American), Aquilo (Roman), Feng Po (Chinese), Stribog (Slavic), and Njord (Norse). This spell, which invokes all the Lords of Air to grant your wish, is best cast on a windy night. You will need:
- a piece of white or pale blue paper with your wish written on it (If you like you can use a color ink which relates to your wish, such as pink or red for love, green for money, orange for success, black for banishing, and so on.)
- your favorite perfume, cologne, or aftershave
- a flat, shallow container, such as a tray or dish
- a stick of incense (Ginseng, sage, lavender, sandalwood and violet are good choices, if you happen to have one of them on hand.)
- optional: finely chopped, powdered, or crumbled herbs which relate to your wish (See the chart below.) The Spell: Assemble the spell ingredients. Light the incense, get into a magickal mood, and create sacred space around the area where you will be working. Take the paper on which you have written your wish, and spray or anoint it with the perfume. Don't be concerned if this causes the ink to run or smear, because the paper will still hold your wish.
Focus on your wish, with particular concentration on the end result that you would like it to have. Waft the paper through the air a few times to dry the perfume, then pass it repeatedly through the incense smoke. The paper should then be scented. Focus on your wish again, as you cut or tear the paper into confetti-sized pieces. Sprinkle these onto the tray. (Optional ) If you are using herbs, sprinkle a large spoonful of them into the tray and mix them with the pieces of paper. Here are examples of some of the commonplace herbs which correspond to different types of wishes: Ambition, Goals: bay leaves Attraction: cinnamon Clarity: dandelion, lemongrass Confidence: cardamom, turmeric Fertility: pine, flour Fidelity: chili powder Friendship: lemon zest, lavender Happiness catnip, marigold Increase: rosemary Health: garlic, thyme Job, Career: pecan Justice: cedar Love, Romance: rose, carnation Money, Finances: mint, clover Reversal: sage Success: ginger, basil Herbs can be used singly, or combined. For example, if you wish to get a raise at work you might use mint, rosemary, and ground pecans. If you wish to get pregnant you might add flour and ginger to the tray, but if you wish for justice you might use ginger and finely ground cedar chips. If you wish to find a mate you might add cinnamon and carnation petals. If you wish to get out of debt you might use sage, and so on. The Spell: Get into a magickal mood, and take the container outside at night. Raise power. Hold it up, face East, and say: ìGods of Winds, Lords of Air, Grant my wish if it be fair.î Place the tray in a place where the wind is likely to reach it, such as on a lawn chair or balcony railing. Concentrate on your wish and say again: Gods of Winds, Lords of Air, Grant my wish if it be fair. Visualize your wish going forth into the world with the wind, and becoming manifest. Ground the power that you raised. Leave the container outdoors all night, and check on it the next morning. It is a positive sign if you find the container empty, but a negative omen if anything remains in it.

Let It Snow Spell
Color of the day: Blue Incense of the day: Sandalwood
Cold and crisp outside? Or is your skiing weekend in danger of being canceled due to lack of the white stuff? A spell to make it snow may be in order. This spell is best done in the evening. Put shaved ice in a blue bowl. Light a blue candle and place it in the bowl, adding more ice if needed to stabilize it. Then say:
Goddess of the northern cold, Goddess of the snowy fields, Bring me snow From your clouds on high, Upon the Earth, May it be revealed. Let it snow and let it stay, So in your honor, We can play!
Leave the candle to burn out, then place the water outside on the ground. Go to bed and dream of soft white snow.

Liar's Tarot Color of the day: Green Incense of the day: Balsam The New Moon is a traditional time for divination. Try this divination game I call Liar’s Tarot. It is a great activity in or out of ritual for a group meeting on a New Moon. You’ll be surprised by the wisdom it imparts. Ground, center, and merge as a group. Do an invocation asking for wisdom. Shuffle the cards. Now each person takes a card and does not look at it. Hold the card up to your forehead facing out. Everyone sees your card except you. Now, starting with the person at your left and going around clockwise, each person reads your card for you. It might be that some people in the group know tarot and others do not, but everyone should read. Tarot lends itself to this sort of spontaneous, I-don’t-know-what-I’m-talking-about divination, which is often effective and meaningful. Each person will receive multiple readings, all the way around the circle. After all readings are done, look at your card. Meditate on the card tonight. You might want to take notes on the reading before you go to bed. This is your card and your reading for the next two weeks, until the Full Moon. Walk with it, think on it, and let it seep into your being. By: Deborah Lipp |

Spell for a Late Bus
Color of the day: Green Incense of the day: Myrrh
There’s a simple spell you can do if you rely on public transportation. Carry paper and pencil with you. If the bus or train is late (or if you’re running late, and it absolutely must come as soon as possible), take out your paper and pencil and draw the bus (or train) arriving. Get as detailed as possible. You can do a series of sketches, like cartoons; first the bus driving up, then stopping, then yourself getting on. Pour your concentration fully into your drawing. As you release energy into the drawing, you create a magical signal pulling the bus to you. Is this just a placebo effect? Did the bus come exactly when it would have anyway? No. Not only did your energy have an effect, but you also distracted yourself away from worried, unpleasant energy that might have been clogging things up.
