The Basics Of Brewing
How you prepare your brew is just as important as what you brew. Both for health purposes and magikal intention.
· The Water:
It's best to use spring or distilled water for brewing, rather than normal tap water. Spring water is actually the best because it contains additional natural minerals that you won't find in tap water. Distilled water will do, because it does not contain the added florid you'll find in most city and county water systems through the tap. Well water also works because it come directly from mother Earth.
· The Mortar & Pestle:
A non metallic mortar and pestle should always be used when grinding herbs. However, you should never use the same mortar and pestle for herbs you plan on digesting with other herbs you use for oils, incense or other purposes. A
marble mortar and pestle is always the best choice, but it's not a necessity.
· The Pot:
Once again a non metallic pot should be used for the brewing process. To day you can find various forms of tea pots at your local tea and coffee shop. There are few exceptions, a cast iron cauldron would be one. But cauldrons are not widely used today. Heating can be electric or gas however, microwaving is not recommended.
If you're using a cauldron, electric and gas heat is the easiest to use, but if you chose to go all out with fire, make sure you're not using pine, or mesquite of any kind. And please, please take all the necessary precautions.
You may also consider solar brewing. Preparing your herbal mixtures and brew bags as normal, placing them inside a clean glass jar. Secure the lid and place in direct sunlight preferably in a warm location out doors. It's best to leave the jar in the sunlight all day.
· The Herbal Brewer
(the tea pouch)
What you place your herbs in is also important. The brewer should also be some other form than metal. You can also find pre-made tea bags where you provide the tea.
Cut a round coffee filter in half, or just use a V-shaped coffee filter. Once you have prepared your brewing herbs, place the mixture in the center of filter. Twist the filter to close around the herbs and secure with white nylon thread.
· The Vessel:
Once again, what you put your tea in to drink is also important. And once again, non metallic vessels are best.
