DAY TWO

The everyday miracle of the power coming back on still hasn't happened.
There is no water coming out of your pipes.
Where are you and your family going to go to the bathroom?
Your kids are scared.
The sky looks wierd.
There is no way to find out why all this is happening.
You can't contact your friends, or Lady Majyk, or anyone out of earshot.
You are a witch.
WHAT DO YOU DO?
From: MystikalSummerStarr Sent: 5/30/2007 6:34 AM
I would call upon the Lord and Lady to guide me in what I needed to do. I would go to the creek to get water and boil it on the wood stove so that we could drink it.
I would hold my children and resure them all would be ok.
This is just day, I don't know what is in store for us tomorrow.

I dreamt of Qyz today .. I don't know why? So I thought I would drop in here ...

Unfortunately, my story would not change much from how I wrote it, but I will rewrite it and try to keep it going for a couple of days. I am not on the computer much for the next couple of weeks, but I will try :)

We just went through 10 hours of no power ... so I know exactly what I would do *g* We are always equipped for no power, because we often have power failures here, for hours or days, for no reason.

I'll start first ... as soon as the power goes out, no matter when, even in the middle of the night ... I wake up and so do my dogs. What I did was go to the window to see if the entire street was dark. It was. I then used my senses to find my matches and light my candle. I found my Hydro bill and called. LAN lines work even without power. If the phone works, then I would find out about the power. If the phone is dead, then I know that it is time to leave this house.

Why would I leave the house? Without power, the sump pumps would not work. I have two electric ones. They would not work as soon as the power goes out. I have another one which goes with the water level. It works as long as the town has water. It may work once if this scenario has no water in town. It is a very dry spring, but a few days of this and my house would be flooded, no doubt. I have a fourth sump pump that works on a car battery. That will give me some time.

I took the candle downstairs and checked the propane tanks to make sure they were not going to explode (I am rather nervous with propane :( ) and I took a look at the sump pumps. The water was not coming up .. yet... good. On to the next step.

I took what I could from the basement to make sure it would not be ruined and got my dogs upstairs.

I never use the water when there is a power failure. I know I have one flush left in the toilet .. I can always pour water down the bowl if that flush is gone. That is no problem. I have a septic tank, so I have a place to go ?the septic is almost empty, so I don't have to worry about it not taking what I pour down. I don't have to worry about that.

(I have lived through 4 months of no septic tank in the winter ?this is what I did in that case. I pooped in plastic bags and I peed in a jar. I poured the pee in one place (I could not use my septic), watered it down and placed my septic powder over this area to help with decomposting. The urine is not a big problem, it is the poop. Putting it in the land fill is really not a great solution for the environment, but baby diapers go there all the time ... so out in the trash it went. ?in this case, if I stayed here, I would put it directly into my septic tank hole, since it is almost empty. Pee can go down the drain, it will go to the septic tank. Before I left, I would put the powder for the septic tank in to help with the decomposting)

I already have bottles of water from the lake up north. That is no problem. I will not open the fridge or freezer yet. I will wait on that. I have enough kibble to last about a month for the dogs, so I don't have to cook for them yet.

I have a full tank of gas. i am very used to going weeks without food, having lived many years without money. No power, no money ?all ATMs are down and all computers have my money in a computer ... so that will be out. However, I will probably try to go to a bank when I go up north?I am used to not calling people as I have not had money for long distance. All people I know are long distance.

Yes, I would still drive up to the cottage. We are equipped there and the neighbours actually care about you. There is a lake with clean water, an outhouse, 2 wood stoves ... we are used to living without power. And, this house will be a health hazard once the ground water comes into the basement.

Without power, I don't have a job. No use sitting around here. I am on contract, so I won't get paid. I'm already used to that stress :)

I would go through everything I have. Pack my healing books, dog stuff and books, nature books and books I like to read. I would probably take some magazines for burning. Everything else I would put in boxes to give to my neighbour across the road.

Once it is decent hour of the day, or what I figure is decent since my Kuckoo is not working, I would go to my neighbour and barter a trailer from him. Explain I am going up to the cottage and need to pack. I would figure out with him how to get a hitch on my car.

Now I can pack my car, on my car and on the trailer what fits. Not much to take since all electronics stay here. (It is actually a relief to get rid of all electronics and leave computers and design behind :) )

Whatever clothes I don't take, I would tell the same neighbour to give to the community. I would take my feather beds, blankets, healing remedies, herbs, dry food stuff, snowshoes, canoe paddle, shovels, garden tools, tools, dog stuff and some personal stuff with some pieces of furniture.

I can last a couple of days here. I can share my food with my neighbour who has a fire outside. We can cook there and I have a propane tank we can use up to cook the food in the freezer. I only have a couple of days of food, so will probably only stay until I am packed.

Side note: I am actually already going through a lot of my stuff to see what I can get rid of, so I already know what I would keep and what I would not keep.

Back to story. It is too bad that it is so early in the year. My land is overgrown with wild strawberries and raspberries and those black raspberries (forget the name) but it is too early for that. Too early for the mushrooms as well. Oh well, the wild animals will have something.

I would make sure the garage was emptied so I could put my trailer in there until I am ready to leave. The only person I have here who can help me would be that one neighbour. I would be talking to him about a couple of things.

I would make sure all my stuff that I am not taking is up out of the basement. I will probably move a lot of it into the garage when I leave, I'll see. Today I just packed all my stuff together and made plans.

As a witch, I would contact the witches, wiccans, mediums and shaman I know through meditation. I can feel that a lot are thinking of me already.

For my dogs, I would make the day as normal as usual. They would still be going out to relax in the backyard and go for walks and the little one would get her training. My big one is stressed ?moving and packing again? So I would give them a lot of massages. I may make a little oatmeal for the them ?boil water either on my neighbour's fire or make a fire outside and boil water ?worse case scenario would be in my fondue pots with candles under.

I end my day in meditation and cuddle with my dogs.

blessings,
Ta' wa' di

I like this question, a no brainer for us here.  We been preparing for many years, collecting and storing what would be needed.  I try to live a simple life now so when we did loose things it wouldn't be a big deal.  I think though the worst would be loosing the computer and phone, not being able to talk with my long distant family and  friends.
First we grow most of my food and can, dry it. I have also dried many fruits and vegies that I know would be impossible to get, only because there are many fruits and vegies that I love that are seasonal or can't be growth this far north.
Yes I have set aside a very large pantry area in my cellar just for this we could actually last a couple of years unless we had company, I have put enough for 4 people for a year.  Plastic bins filled with dry goods and seeds.  Most of my cleaning products are homemade so I have what I need to put something together.  You will laugh but we also got a hand crank washing machine, it only does a couple items at a time but it works great (got it when we would go camping). We have a smoke and sugar house if we need to use it. Hand cranked grain mill, to make flours or meal if we needed to, it an antique but it works great.  We do raise our own animals for food.  Also in this area the farmers all work together during diasters, we have a driving horse with wagon and a sleigh so getting some place may be a little more work but we can get there.  We also keep a large amount of animal feed available.
We have collected and stored everything from medicinals, blankets, rope,  batteries, radios, flashlights, lots of matches and lighers, water and we do have a natural spring that comes into our house which does not need electricity to flow extra filters to keep the water clean.  I got books on vegetation in this area that would be edible if times got really bad I have learned what to eat to live off of the land.  We even got a TV that works on batteries. We have a fire pit set up for cooking outside, a travel trailer set up for guest and even a couple of tents with camping gear.
We have cut wood and have saws and axes if we needed to use them, but I have to build up some more muscles, lol.
We are in the process of getting a small windmill to make our own electricity.  The only thing we need to put into place is a heating element like a wood stove, right now we have a gas fire place. We do have a wood cooking stove but it not hooked up in the house yet, but that wouldn't be that big a deal.  Lights, well we have so many storms up here that knock out the electricty for days and even weeks some times I have learned to keep many candles and lots of lamp oil available.  I just love reading and writing by a flame anyway. Though I hate them we do have fire arms for both hunting and protection with lots of amo, and my hubby has taught me how to use them.  I am learning how to use a bow but right now I am a terrible aim with it. I know I could go on and on about all the stuff I have just in case, but my barn second story also has clothing and many other things that would be needed for everyday life if something happened.
I have even  talkied with family as far as a disater, making sure if they needed to come to our home, we have lots of room to house family and friends, hey you do what you need to survive and help the ones you love and your neighbor right.
I think the only problem would be is the disaster cause contamination, oh geez, now I thinking better get more water together.  Boy, I think I thought of it all but I am sure there is more, just hope it never happens.

Blessings

Day 2
Electricity still out. only heard brief announcement on radio about a "cataclysmic event" a few emergency civil defense announcements saying it was NOT a test and then nothing but static.
Going into emergency mode
Find basic tools: Wrench, pliers, shovel, screwdrivers, hammer, flashlights, lighters, candles, blankets, water bottles.
Have the kids haul water in from the canal across the road and start boiling it and putting clorox in it. Gather firewood. Check food supplies. Move stuff from freezers to fridge to help keep things cool. Check meds available.
Put together a first aid kit and have everything available to pack in the car if needed.
Sky looks like it might storm.
Don't have to worry about pilot lights because we don't have gas.
We have a septic tank and the kids can haul water from the canal to pour down the toilets to flush them.

never really thought about it, you can't know what you'll do until it happens, so guess we'll have to see......
From: Qyzida Sent: 6/5/2007 1:30 PM
You're right Liz, none of us can know for sure what we will do when a catastrophe strikes. But by reading the data posted and using your imagination based on your knowledge of the personalities of yourself and your friends and family, you can extrapolate some vision of what might happen and how you might handle it.

The purpose of this excersize is to help make us see how much we take for granted, and work on building the strengths we have within, and how to flex our purpose and ideals.

Each day you're given a template of something to build on. Lady Majyk wants to see just who of us and how each of us handles adversary in the context of how ingrained our faith is.
Each of us has been through some sort of disaster, or adversary for a short period of time, she's interested to see what we would come up with just in case something long term came along, and how we would handle it.

I'll look forward to reading your posts, we only have one more week until she returns to see the fruits of the seed she planted.

Blessings

This acutally happened last year in Missouri.  A storm came through and knocked thousands of electrical lines down.  We had no electric for about a week.

Just recently we moved and had to live without electric for weeks in our new home.

I just made do.  Used candles & flashlights.  Went to the library and got some books to read.  Just waited until things got better.

I do not prepare for disasters.  I believe that what I need will be given to me through spirits.

Day Two:

The electrity is still out, and I don't think it's coming back on. We're doing our best to eat all the meats, fish and vegetables that we had fresh and frozen before it all spoils. It's very cloudy, and still outside. We still don't know why the power is out, we haven't been able to get the radio to work... only static. It's been warm, but the nights have been cold, luckily we have a ton of blankets. I think storms are on the horizon. We also had a ton of candles already, so we've been set, though like I said we have to watch the cats around them. Everyone is pretty antsy, trying to remain positive though, playing some games and telling stories, sticking together. It's a good thing we have the herb garden as well, it helps with the cooking over the fire pit we have in the back. Our neighbor came by last night, to check on us and make sure we have enough supplies. We just told him we're okay, but we'll be sure to check in with him. He's a police officer, so hopefully he can help keep things calm if anyone gets rowdy. He did say that he heard some news over the radio, but he wouldn't tell us exactly what he learned. He just told us to make sure we have things taken care of because he doesn't think the electricity is coming back on. Things feel worse today, depressing, but we have each other and that's what matters. I wish I could get ahold of my parents in Baton Rouge, and my sister in Denver, but that isn't happening. My friend came over here too, to check in with us. We talked about what we will do when the baby is due, how we will deal with it. I sure hope tomorrow feels better, I'm already tired of this stagnant feeling in the air. Maybe a storm can clear up the things a bit.
