Sacred Circle Necklaces

A sacred circle necklace is a beaded necklace that holds special

beads to represent three different aspects of paganism: the lunar

cycle, the wheel of the year, and the five elements. The beads that

represent these aspects are chosen by the creator of the necklace.

More than one necklace can be made with different beads for

different representations.

 

Materials:

25 larger beads

13 to represent thirteen moons, for the lunar cycle

8 to represent eight sabbats, for the wheel of the year

4 to represent the four directional elements (You represent spirit,

the fifth element, yourself when you are wearing the necklace.)

175-250 smaller spacer beads (Seven to ten of these will go between

each sequential pair of the 25 larger beads.)

Procedure:

1. Cut a length of beading thread at least twice the desired length

of your necklace, plus six inches. Gauge the needed length from the

following, whichever is larger:

(a) the size of your beads and how much space they take up on a

string, or

(b) how big a loop your necklace will need to make, with the ends

tied together, for you to be able to put it on and remove it easily

from over your head.

2. Thread the beading thread through the needle. Tie a knot in the

end opposite the needle large enough, so that no beads will slip off

the thread. (If you start with a four-foot, single-thickness thread,

you will end up with a two-foot, double-thickness thread with a knot

and 2-3 inches of extra thread on one end and the needle on the

other.)

3. Thread the beads onto the thread in the following pattern:

element bead, 7-10 spacers, moon bead, 7-10 spacers, sabbat Bead, 7-

10 spacers, moon bead, 7-10 spacers, sabbat bead, 7-10 spacers, moon

bead, and 7-10 spacers.

4. Repeat this pattern three more times. End with the spacers that

come after the bead for the thirteenth moon.

5. Cut the thread on the needle end and knot it as you did the other

end on step 2, leaving 2-3 inches of extra thread on the end.

6. Tie the two ends of the necklace securely together. Trim off any

excess thread.

You can vary pattern of beads, or use different kinds for different

meanings. Variations can focus on any of the parts. For example,

instead of just one bead (O) representing a sabbat, you might use a

sequence of three beads (oOo). You might also have specific colors

for each of the elements or for each moon, depending on what you

want to emphasize. Be creative!
