Last night I had the opportunity of watching "The Last Samurai," on DVD. What a production!!! Personally I am not into movies in which violence takes a great part, but I must express, that this one "is" one of a kind.

Tom Cruise, is caucation and North American, not Japanese. Before taking this role, he was not able to speak this foreign language, but in many scenes, he did speak, and we saw the subtitles.

It is my understanding, from the interviews presented on the DVD, that he took a great deal of time and care, in not only learning as much of their language as he was able to, but as well, studied closely the methods and beliefs of the once, very strong Samuarai.

In my opinion, it is a "must see" movie, for those that have not already seen it.

I thought i was his attempt to do 'Dances With Wolves' It was set during the 'westernization' of Japan & yes the Samurai tradition did end at that time BUT the emperor went on to invest heavily in military armaments. That's why they defeated Russia 30years later & invaded Manchuria after that

If you want to se a really great Samurai film I recommend Akira Kirosawa's 'The Seven Samurai' If you want to know what it's about , it was remade 2 years after it came out & called 'The Magnificent Seven'
