Last monday evening I was at restaurant for supper, with two of my most important clients. A business meal, in jacket and necktie, at an elegant place. Suddenly my cell sounded as I got a message. Feeling sorry for what is considered truely unpolite, I made the excuse to stay waiting for news by home and for that to have not switched it off. So I took the phone and read the message that was: - You, bloody stakanovist, tell to your clients to take their f***ing money up for the *** and come here. Franz Ferdinand are opening the concert - My guests were looking me, worrying if I had some problems from home, so I told them - No, all is going well, now I can switch off the phone, excuse me again. - And I was smiling saying that, the clients taking it because of the good news instead I was smiling thinking about the execeptional suggestion my friend wrote for their money. That evening there was the concert of Depeche Mode, at the Stadio Olimpico in Rome. I had managed to go with some friends but after we decided it those clients wanted to meet me just in that evening and I could not say no. The day after I called the friend who made the message and she laughed a lot knowing that I read it just in front of the clients. I missed Depeche Mode and I regreat of it because they are interesting, with a long career behind in which they changed a lot. In Italy the album "Ultra" was a big success, in it DM presented a new side of their music. Franz Ferdinand too would be interesting as this young Scottish group have already done two albums showing some talent. Well, it will be, for me, for the next time. But the concert that I really missed is another one, a one that I'll never forget. The only time Led Zeppelin song in Italy. Summer 1971, Led Zep in concert at Milan. With a friend of mine we started from Rome by a FIAT 600 (as this one: http://www.unibas.it/utenti/longhitano/Fiat%20600_02.jpg) travelling by nigth to have some fresh. Arrived to Milan we reached the Vigorelli (a byke's stadium) where the concert would be. It was morning but already a lot of people was there. We spent time also playing football with other guys in front of the closed gates. When they were opened the people was really a lot, too much for the Vigorelli. And the silly idea of the organizers was to present the Led after some Italian singers who song as the old melodies. Something as to serve boiled carrots to whom has ordered a bloody bistick. Me and my friend just started to say - boooooo - to them, others started to throw a lot of things to the stage. And we were too many, with the ones behind pushing strongly. Some Italian singers did'nt even came out and finally the Led appeared. WOWWOWWOW they started "Immigrant song" but the crowd was by now outside control and there were also agitator politicians, come there not for the concert but to create accidents. Robert Plant stopped several times, saying - Be calm, please. Stop to push, please - Like that they plaied other two songs (I don't remember which) but suddenly the Police decided that all was going too far and started to fire tearing things (I don't know well in English, from them comes out a smoke that makes you tearing with the eyes that burn) and to beat the people. It was the end of the world, people figthing with policemen, other jumping on the stage, the Led running to the backstage (after I knew they closed themselves on the toilet), someone tried to steal the instruments but people of the staff figthed to defend it, other were running to all ways, others were crying and vomiting, me and my friend staied on the ground as carpets, laughing as mad. A girl took my hand saying - Help, please help me. - OMG how she was handsome! I took strongly her hand saying - Be calm, be calm, I cover you if they come here - We were lucky, the figthing was going far from us, I sow a way to escape, we standed up and runned away as missiles. Nothing of bad happened to the three of us, just some coughing and tearing by the smoke. Robert Plant after said: - In Milan I was sure to die! - The Led Zeppelin did never come again to play in Italy. I really missed to watch them live but the girl probably was better as I had a very nice period with her. Ciao, Sandro

Awww Sandro - how frustrating! Well at least you got the girl Zep were in concert 200 yards down the road from where i was living in Earls Court, London in '71, same year as yours, and I've been kicking myself ever since - why didn't I go see them? I don't know !!!! We were so spoilt for good music it seemed there was some amazing band playing up the road every week, so half the time we didn't bother Milan Master | | Date: 1971-07-05, 2nd European Tour | Venue: Vigorelli Velodrome, Milan, Italy | Label: Fan Release, 1 CD-R | Sound: AUD Mono 5(from master-tape) | Track List: Since I´ve been loving You (incomplete), Black Dog, Dazed & Confused (end missing) | | | | | | | | Whole Lotta Love* | | Date: 1971-07-05, 2nd European Tour | Venue: Vigorelli Velodrome, Milan, Italy | Label: Led Zeppelin Fan Club of Italy #72169, 1 LP* | Sound m -Aud Iwould give 3-4 | Track List: Since I´ve been loving You (incomplete), Black Dog, Dazed & Confused (end missing) | Aufnahme: LP, gerade noch gut hörbar | | | |

Jodie! Thank you a lot! I want to try to find the CD you posted! OMG it would be a dive of 35 years back for me! But, it seems that the first song was'nt "Immigrant song" but "Since I've been loving you" ...... mumble mumble mumble ....... the girl was Lorena but now .... could be instead Marina? It is my age, the problem? Naaaaaaahh, the problem are too many songs and too many ... girls! Ciao, Sandro P. S. But if they were singing "Dazed and confused" why to be astonished at what happened? P. P. S. You are so rigth, Jodie. There were tons of good music! But there is always a lot of good music, now too. Today maybe only more difficult to find something really new. |

1-I was once on my way to see Roxy Music play in local club (entrance fee-£1 !) when I met some friends who persuaded me to go fo a drink with them instead. Doh! 2-I was on my way with friend to see Frank Zappa at the Royal Albert Hall when my friend's father caught up with us at the tube station. As we went in he shouted 'Roger! your Max Jaffa concert has been cancelled!' |
