I caught part of the speech Arnie just made, and there's nothing available online yet to quote/post, but man, we're in serious trouble here. He's talking about massive state employee layoffs and putting all (or most?) infrastructure projects on hold - apparently we'll be like bankrupt by Feb.

I wish I knew the details. I know our unemployment rate is 8.9% or something like that (8 point something) - we're only behind Michigan and Rhode Island in high unemployment. Our housing just sucks, businesses are closing....

I knew he'd been talking about it, but I guess this speech makes it more official or something. And I'm not even sure why 'they' can't come to any agreements on the budget - why do they do that?

Oh, and I read something yesterday in the paper (or maybe Sat) that the state taxes are going up (or they want them to go up) - raise the sales taxes (I think by a whole point, which is huge really), add a 13 cent tax to petrol, and raise the income tax rate.

No wonder crime is going up....  What did I hear the other day? Paris Hilton's home was burglarized, they got like $2 million worth of stuff. I guess if you're gonna steal, might as well make it worth your while....

The legislature came to an agreement on the budget, the gubernator didn't like it so he vetoed it. In other words, it boils down to being Ahnies fault that the state is in this crisis... without his veto we'd be able to keep limping along for a bit longer.

Maybe we need to do something other than 'limp along' though, you know? I know I'm tired of it.

I don't know the specifics of what's called for, but I agree with him we need to cut spending - at least for a time. If all they want to do is raise our taxes, just to keep afloat, and not cut the spending, I'm not too happy about that.

uh, not that I'm an Arnie fan since I think he's not done that good a job as Governor, but just b/c the legislature came to an agreement on the budget doesn't mean that's a good thing

governments ought to be scaling back and becoming somewhere near efficient right about now

I'd rather "limp along" than see thousands of workers laid off because the state has stopped infrastructure development projects, I'd rather see us "limp along" than see minimum wage caregivers for the handicapped and elderly have their paychecks frozen again, I'd rather "limp along" than see the consequences of his veto.

I don't think the legislature is in the right either, although it seems as though the democrats have been much more willing to bend their position than the republican delegation. I still think both sides should be more willing to negotiate in order to find some way to spread the pain more equitably. (of course I know they won't go for my suggestion to cut costs, empty the 'victimless' criminals out of the state prisons)

It feels to me as though Arnie is acting like some sort of autocrat, not paying attention to what the people are saying but just doing what he thinks is best. He's done everything, and then some, that got Grey Davis recalled....he's a politician and a liar like all the rest. Free Smiley Face
