Rangers v Celtic - Saturday 27th December 2008 - 12.30pm

So here we go.  A full week's build up. No midweek match distractions for either side, although there is the small matter of Christmas Day in the middle for the fans, but as we all know that won't stop training for either side.

The week will probably be full of the "will he won't he" regarding McGeady, which will suit me fine. That'll hopefully keep the attention off Rangers and allow us to prepare quietly.

As things stand, the Rangers team looks to be fairly predictable. The only question is whether Madjid Bougherra will be fit enough to return, and whether Walter will opt for the extra out-and-out midfielder on the left in Lee McCulloch, or stick with the more forward-going Kyle Lafferty. Knowing Walter he'll go with the more cautious approach and McCulloch, but it's hard to argue with that as the key to winning Old Firm games is always in winning the midfield battle.

Celtic's team is less predictable, however. The centre back pairing seems to change with every game at the moment, but I expect them to go back to Caldwell and McManus for this one. If Caldwell plays in midfield with Loovens at the back, that'll suit us just fine. Nakamura will play on the right, McGeady on the left (despite Mizuno's goal today), and I reckon it'll be Brown9 and Robson in the middle, with Robson elbowing Mendes or Ferguson inside 2 minutes. Samaras and McDonald will play up front.

The other big question is what antics will The Roly Poly Holey Goalie get up to this time ?

Your thoughts ?

If we were to say something about all the Celtic players deserving a forearm smash, I think you know what the reaction would be.

Ok, it's time to predict the starting line-ups. I'm willing to concede now that it looks like Celtic are going to be true to their word for once and McGeady looks unlikely to play. I don't for one second believe the "Barry Robson has no chance" stuff, I believe he will start the game. So here's my prediction. I rarely get these spot on, but I'm usually not far away :-

McGregor

Broadfoot         Bougherra      Weir      Papac

Samaras       McDonald

Davis       Mendes       Ferguson      McCulloch

Robson        Hartley       Brown9        Nakamura

Boyd             Miller

Wilson     McManus     Caldwell    Hinkel

Boruc

Lee Naylor should have been sent off for a second bookable offence for chopping down Whittiker.

By the way, I watched with interest as Artur Boruc amazingly forgot to do something at the start of the match in front of the Celtic support that he claims he does before every half of football. His memory conveniently returned when he came out for the second half in front of the Rangers fans.

Funny that.

I'm not going to go into a long-winded review of yesterday. Suffice to say we had one big chance and missed it, they had one big chance and took it. On such fine lines are championships won and lost. C*ltic are not a good team and they didn't play particularly well yesterday. That, to be honest, is what makes it worse. I strongly believe that if Walter had started with any one from Novo, Nigunez, Beasley or Lafferty on the left then Rangers would have won the game. All that was needed was a bit more adventure and a cutting edge. Not Walter's style of course, his caution has allowed a very average C*ltic team to stroll towards the title.

The game was won and lost in the mid-field. Celtic were very strong physically and mentally where we were too weak and timid. I lost count of the number of 50-50 challenges we lost. The game always looked like the first goal would probably win it and so it proved.

Old Firm games are usually won by the team which shows the most desire and I thought all the Celtic players showed this. They didn't all play well individually of course but as a team they were a much more cohesive unit than we were.

Losing one of these games is always hard to take but it is even worse when you know your team has not really turned up on the day. It was difficult to pick out any of our players who had a decent game. In fact it is easier to pick out the ones who were poor on the day but you all saw who they were.

One thing that puzzles me. On the radio people were saying that the pitch was watered half an hour before the game. I was in the ground at 11.30am and went up to see the pitch and the players warming up on three occasions before kick-off and I never saw any sprinklers on. The pitch definitely got worse as the game went on so I don't know what occurred. Any information?
