IF your computer is too slow, it may need a hard drive tune up. . .
Check the meter:
First see if the hard drive is maxed out. On a PC go to "My computer" right click on the C drive & select "Properties" for the capacity pie chart.
On a Mac, click on the hard drive icon once. Then go under "File" on the menu & select "Get info." A hard drive should be no more than 75% full.
Send fun packing:
If the hard drive is filled, review your music, photo & video clip files, which hog space.
Trash the ones you don't need & burn infrequently used files onto CD's.
Be sure to empty the recycle bin.
De-stress the browser:
Clear the cache of your internet browser & delete old, sent & recieved emails, especially those with attachments.
Also remove all spyware that slipped into your computer during downloads.
For PCs, free anti-spyware software is available..
Purge old programs:
Take inventory of the software programs on your computer.
Click to uninstall ones that are no longer used. But if a box asks you whether you want to delete a file used by another program, click no.
Defrag the drive:
Defragmenting allows faster access to files.
The program is in your PC's System Tools folder.
