Hi folks! I would love to hear from all you owners of the African Grey's. Thinking of getting one and what I'm interested in is knowing whether I should get a male or female. Reason I'm asking this question is because I have had my BF Amazon since 2001, and it seems since she's hit that 5 yr. mark, she is no longer "my baby" but is now my husband's girl. Are the Grey's the same way? |

Hi Layne....just throwing in my experience.... I probably won't be much help, because I have 2 'Zons and 2 CAG's - therefore they like each other a lot. I have 2 Amazons, one of which is a BFA. She and my other 'Zon (a female DYH) love my husband, too. Dearly. They don't attack or bite me, but they go insane when d/h walks in the house, and they barely pause playing with toys when I come in. They are both 18 years old. They tolerate me. The greys like us both, but they like me more. They let me scratch their heads and rub their beaks. But they never get as loud or hormonal or nutty as the 'Zons. They are 16 and 17. But you just can't generalize when it comes to parrots! Luck of the draw and all...... |

Hi! I have had two greys. One I handfed as she (really a he) was bonded to me for her whole 16yrs. She passed at 16. She was fine with my husband but her loyalty was to me. Now my second one is two and I got him at 4mths. I didn't handfeed him but he is so bonded to me it is crazy. He is as cuddly as a too. If he could be surgical stuck to me he would be. BUT Bubba is a feather chewer. He did this at 7mths old. He is the happiest bird ever. Got him almost all feathered and he did it again. And he never shuts up. Both were excellent talkers but this one even talks more then the first. But as Barb said you never know what you'll get. I had an Blue Front and she was the meanest bird I knew so there wasn't much touching there. But I loved her immensely. And she kept us smiling. Indy |

Kelly, my zon was only 5 mos. old when I got her & there for awhile I had her where she knew when "play time" was at night & let me know. She would also cuddle with me & get on my shoulder just about any time, and now, she will let me rub her head & neck at times & Tues. night she got my shoulder & stayed for quite awhile when I was cleaning up the kitchen after dinner then yesterday morning, if I even acted like I was going near her cage, she'd come down the side and try to nail me! Makes it pretty tough when trying to feed them! Ha Guess I'm lucky because she never has done any screaming or extremely loud yelling. She's extremely funny - dancing all over her cage & talking. Everbody says she has quite a vocabulary, but I've not been around other ones to know. I'm sure they are all different, they all have different personalities just like us, huh? Are your Grey's cuddly & like to be held like Indy's? At my age, I don't have any business getting another one but sure would like to have one. A friend of mine used to raise quakers & Sun Conures & when she would get overloaded with babies, I helped her hand feed them & would love to hand feed another one. Found one in (a grey) FL last year, but that wasn't in the cards for me to buy a bird at time. |

I'm so sorry to hear that you lost her. Kinda sounds like it doesn't really matter whether if's F or M, just a matter of bonding maybe? I have a friend that has one - a male, she's had for years and she still can't touch him! He just doesn't want to be fooled with but talks up a storm! |

My first Grey wasn't cuddly like Bubba. You could touch her all over but she would push your hand away if she didn't want bothered. To be honest I have no idea why Bubba is cuddly. I never spent alot of time cuddling him when he was a baby. I just never let him get away with anything when he decided he was going through that bitey stage. I would say the average Grey is not cuddly. But I might be wrong. I wouldn't have described my first as cuddly. Affectionate but not cuddly. But then with her she had pssiticossis when she was a baby and I didn't handle her as much as I should have. They are all so different and I don't think there is any way to know before hand. Indy |

I have 15 year old male. He came here at about 4 months of age. Good boy til eh bagans ot get nippy at about age 3. Then he calmed down again and was fine til I had eye surgery. My eyes may look alien to him because he has been naughty ever since. Then I had two heart attacks and he really got naughty. Now he tries to jump off the cage to get me. He's not a great talker but whistles and he's fun to listen to. Annie |

Max is a male (from what I've been told anyway) and he's in love with EVERYONE . He loves me the most though, hehe. He does go nuts when hubby gets home, but after a bit of attention he's done for the night. I'm scared to get a female, only because a family member told us they had one with an impacted egg that passed away. I didn't even know they had a bird, let alone that it died....but who knows. I have only ever been around 2, Max, and Max's previous owners other CAG....who is naughty as can be. I can only tell you that Max is the way he is because I made him that way. I don't tolerate HIM ruling me, and he totally understands "no more Max".....but i show him all kinds of love, and he returns it. He is an excellent bird. He has not really bit me in weeks now (i've only had him since July 07, and he came to me a HUGE biter). |
