Been awhile since I wrote and fill everyone in.. took sniffles to the vet a couple of weeks ago. same problem, but this time no antibiotics. thought that might be the culprit of him loosing weight. so I was showed how to flush them out and how to keep the nasty build up out. Thank goodness for drainage holes! so now I wonder how to keep it from smelling so bad! do I dare use bleach to clean the cage every week or should I use ordinary soap and water. HELP. the local pet store is so expensive with the cage cleaning supplies. 25.00 for 1 liter bottle cleaning solution.
Haley

There are some good things you can use besides bleach to clean cages. One is Apple Cider Vinegar , Another is plain old dawn dish soap and water. Cleaning the cage once a week with a drop of bleach will not hurt it or the bird at all just rinse it good. Does the bird have a bacterial problem? If so, once a month add a drop of ACV(the pure organic kind) to his water for 3 days in a row and that will cut down on bacteria in his crop.

I'm just curious, why and what smells so bad?  The drainage from his nares~just guessing, 'cause Oliver's never had a bad smell, even with an infection.  Nor was there a bad smell from the mouth.
Bleach is good as long as you rinse well.  Vinegar is good too.    Skeeter

I agree with what's been said, especially that simply washing with regular dish detergent and water (and a toothbrush) should go a long way toward getting things clean.  I also sometimes use baking soda on my cages.

With the nice weather coming on, it could also be helpful to just leave the cage outside in sunshine for awhile, after it's been cleaned and rinsed well.

Skeeter snuck in while I was thinking   Just wanted to say--when I mention baking soda, I mean that I use in a paste with water,or just sprinkle on then clean with a rag or toothbrush, NOT that I sprinkle it dry in the bottom of the cage.
