Hi lovebird people. Our 9 year old female, Mitzi, is causing us some stress these days. She used to go through bouts of chewing/nesting ever few months or so. We could deal with it when it was less frequent. But now it seems like a permanent state of affairs. She went through a nesting/egg laying phase about 2 months ago. We let her sit on the duds for a couple of weeks and then slowly removed eggs and nest over a few days. She took a break and was her calm, friendly and cuddly old self for a while. Then after about a week or two, she started obsessing over the kitchen garbage can and a nearby cabinet she likes to hide out in, and started chewing anything and everything she could get her beak on, including the wood inside the cabinet. I try to keep her in her very roomy cage more often, with some chewable magazines and stuff, but my husband insists on having her out when we are home. Any suggestions to get her to calm down and quit ruining every book, magazine, check, bill, card and piece of mail that enters our house? Any advice is welcome.

Yup, ignore your hubby and keep her locked up except when you can supervise her carefully.
Really, that's all you can do or she can get into something toxic and get really sick.
Just chewing cabinetry could be toxic due to the stains and finishes. Then there is the unidentified dye in all those magazines.
They will drive you nuts when in hormone mode.
Try to not let her get into any dark places. They seem like good dark nestboxes to hormonal birds.
Give her some chunks of wood. Clean untreated pine from a lumber yard will keep her busy inside the cage and is nontoxic. You can cut a 1 x 2 board into little 1 or 2 inch pieces and toss them in the floor of her cage. Also ball up half sheets of black and white newspaper. I buy packages of 16 pine door shims at the lumber yard for a dollar. She would love those. They are soft enough for small birds to chew up.
Good luck working her thru this.
Annie
