In my opinion, and keep in mind I know next to nothing about NASCAR except they go round in circles for hours, make mega bucks and alot of the people I really care about love this "sport". Is a race driver an athlete? Where does it begin and end? Is a soccerr player an athlete? I have questions on many sports, as to whether or not the participants are athletes. I have even been told that cheerleading is a sport.......... which would make the cheerleaders athletes? Football and basketball, there is no question in my mind, hockey too. What do you think? Webster says Main Entry: ath·lete Pronunciation: 'ath-"lEt, ÷'a-th&-"lEt Function: noun Etymology: Middle English, from Latin athleta, from Greek athlEtEs, from athlein to contend for a prize, from athlon prize, contest Date: 15th century : a person who is trained or skilled in exercises, sports, or games requiring physical strength, agility, or stamina the most evident idea of an athlete is some one who is has great physical speed are strength but an athlete must also possess skill which is were golf falls in as do kickers in the NFL and bowlers to bowl properly you must have some skill at throwing the ball right spin etc. same with NASCAR skill and stamina now i agree that some sports require more athletic ability than others. I tell my kids: not all athletes play sports and not all sports require athletes Just my 2 cents, Datruck

I would rate NASCAR more as "sports entertainment" more than just plain sport. I love it but I can viably see and understand both sides of the arguement. It takes more physical stamina to drive against huge G-Forces at 180 mph plus for 500 miles than it does to roll a bowling ball or hit a golf ball. I have rolled blocks of 18-24 games in a day and really didn't feel like I was spent but I don't think I would say the same driving a racecar for 4 hours at 185. Also, NASCAR is ALOT more than drive and turn left as the haters call it. Plus, you can't be in NASCAR and perform drunk like you can in bowling or golf. Hunting with rifle is also NOT a sport. If it can be done by drunken hick rednecks, then it can't qualify as a sport. It doesn't take much skill to use one of todays highly accurate, high powered rifles with a high powered scope to put down a deer or comparable animal. My wife, on his first day at the range, was able to hit the circle consistently with minimal effort, and she is nowhere near what I call an experienced shooter. ATHLETES: Football: YES Baseball: Mostly YES, but not all players are athletes.(David Wells) Basketball: YES Soccer: YES Bowling: NO. A 400 pound beergut has as much of a chance at rolling a 300 as Walter Ray Williams does. You don't need any athletic conditioning to be a good bowler. Golf: NO NASCAR: YES...somewhat. Kind of between the REAL sports and golf/bowling. Some physical conditioning/stamina needed, but not like Football, Basketball or Soccer. Alot of this is different for different people, depending on ones own definition of what an athlete is. View other groups in this category.

And I don't see NFL players driving bumper to bumper at 200 MPH for 3 to 4 hours without taking a break every other 10 minutes. |

<HTML>And with that said everyone who plays a sport is an athlete, everyone in their own job is a pro and a competitor. Nobody gets put down because their sport or job is different from others is. Scott |

this is one topic that I am Going to agree
to disagree on what an athlete is and what a sport is as it is such a volatile
topic as any NASCAR, WWE, Golf or Curling fan may agree.

My thoughts on this usually go along the flow of the difference between sport, game, or sports entertainment. My rankings as follows: 1. Sport - football, hockey, baseball, soccer, basketball, etc.... basically anything where you physically compete against another athlete or team. 2. Game - golf, bowling, chess, checkers, etc.....anything that you compete against a physical object (e.g. a golf course), or a mental challenge. 3. Sports Entertainment - Any car racing, horse racing, WWE, etc.....things where there is a physical/mental challenge, but the outcome is not solely based on the actual performance of the player(s) themselves..that is to say the car in NASCAR, the horse in the Kentucky Derby, the script in the WWE. As for hunting/fishing....I call it THE FOOD CHAIN. Eat or be eaten! |
