I have a question for you:

In the world children are taught to be very competitive.  Grown ups are very competitive.  Even preachers and churches  are competitive with each other.

But I have been pondering this matter.

I want as many of you as will, to join in this discussion and give us your opinion.  Then try to give us Scripture for your belief.

I am very interested to know what you all think about this;  and if you practice this in your own life or church.

In His love and searching for more.

Joie there are so many scriptures that prove that we should not be in competition with each other that I will give only a few to let the others join in. You know it is funny that you posted this because I just came from another board where you and I are members and I put something in a post about where we are to be one in Christ.

 Romans 12
5 So we, being many, are one body in Christ, and every one members one of another.

1Co 10:17

<DIR>

For we being many are one bread, and one body: for we are all partakers of that one bread.

1 Corinthians 12
14For in fact the body is not one member but many.
15If the foot should say, "Because I am not a hand, I am not of the body," is it therefore not of the body?

16And if the ear should say, "Because I am not an eye, I am not of the body," is it therefore not of the body?

17If the whole body were an eye, where would be the hearing? If the whole were hearing, where would be the smelling?

18But now God has set the members, each one of them, in the body just as He pleased.

19And if they were all one member, where would the body be?

20But now indeed there are many members, yet one body. 21And the eye cannot say to the hand, "I have no need of you"; nor again the head to the feet, "I have no need of you."

22No, much rather, those members of the body which seem to be weaker are necessary.

23And those members of the body which we think to be less honorable, on these we bestow greater honor; and our unpresentable parts have greater modesty,

24but our presentable parts have no need. But God composed the body, having given greater honor to that part which lacks it,

25that there should be no schism in the body, but that the members should have the same care for one another.

26And if one member suffers, all the members suffer with it; or if one member is honored, all the members rejoice with it.
27Now you are the body of Christ, and members individually.
There are plenty more on this subject.

This is a good verse on this subject:

Romans 12:10--Be kindly affectioned one to another with brotherly love;  in honour  PREFERRING  one another.

This seems to me to be saying that I should truly love my neighbor as myself or even above and desire him to be honoured above me.  Now this being the case,  I do not see how being in competition with each other is any where near LOVE.

To me to be in competition with each other shows a desire to 'out do' the other person and is a total  LACK of love.
For if I love another person and desire for him to be honoured above me,  how could I be trying to out do that person and in a matter of speaking -  it is actually trying to show-off in front of that other person and put them down in order to put myself up.

This is certainly contrary to Jesus' teachings.

Also this:   1Tim. 5:21-- I charge thee before God, and the Lord Jesus Christ, and the elect angels, that thou observe these things without perferring one before another, doing nothing by partiality.

I remember another verse says that partiality is sin.

So, if I compete with another, I am partial to myself.

So, I say it is sin.  Then I wonder why do people teach their children to do this knowing God is against it and they will have a hard time overcoming this; having been taught it by their elders.

Acts 2
1   And when the day of Pentecost was fully come, they were all with one accord in one place.
Acts 4
32   And the multitude of them that believed were of one heart and of one soul: neither said any of them that ought of the things which he possessed was his own; but they had all things common.
33   And with great power gave the apostles witness of the resurrection of the Lord Jesus: and great grace was upon them all.
34   Neither was there any among them that lacked: for as many as were possessors of lands or houses sold them, and brought the prices of the things that were sold,
35   And laid them down at the apostles' feet: and distribution was made unto every man according as he had need.

This is some good answers which have been given.  Thanks for responding.

You know Jesus taught us to love each other as He loved us.  He said love your neighbour as yourself.  When his disciples asked to be placed into special places:  one on the right hand, the other on the left in the kingdom,  Jesus rebuked them for this and said you are all brethren and with you it shall not be so that one rule over the other.

It would be a very good thing if most religious people could get ahold of this.  I have been in several movements where the people looked up to one man as if he were god.  This is wrong.  The same people did not esteeme the others at all.  This is NOT Christian love.

The Word teaches that God  HATES  pride;  even a proud look.  If someone is in competition with others, they have a proud spirit of desiring to be looked up to.  This will cause God to resist you;  for He said God resists the proud.

American people are very bad at this matter of pride and competition.  But it is against God and your soul.

So, how could sports be any good when it rest solely upon competition with others.  I know for a fact that lots of dads make their little boys feel unloved and unworthy if they do not excell in sports.  This is a cancer eating up family life and Christian life.

Let's hear more on this subject.  This could and should get very deep.

This is something people need very much to get.

Joie
