Memorials

Memorial at the Barracks

On 4 May 1988 (retired) Lt Col de Koning, (retired) Lt Col van Woerden, (retired) Lt Col Horsthuis, (retired) Capt Gerritsen the initiator and (retired) Maj Klein, unveiled the Memorial at the Square of the Engelbrecht van Nassaubarracks in Roosendaal. The memorial shows the names of commandos who were killed in action in World War II, The Netherlands East Indies and Korea. Ex-commando Timmermans, an artist by profession, designed the memorial. This memorial can be found at square of the Engelbrecht van Nassaubarracks in Roosendaal.

Statue of the "victorious commando"
In 1967, the occasion of the 25th anniversary of the Korps Commandotroepen, it was offered a statue by the town council of Roosendaal and Nispen. The statue represents a commando with his head up taking an obstacle. J. Godwald, the mayor of the town of Roosendaal and Nispen officially handed it over on 22 August 1968, to the Korps commander Lt Col J.C. van Woerden. Sculptress Mrs. J. Krosch made the statue. The statue was temporarily been moved to Bergen op Zoom but is placed back, to Engelbrecht van Nassaubarracks in Roosendaal, in the July of 2002.

Korea Memorial
From 1950 until 1953 the Korps played a major part in training volunteers for the Dutch United Nations Detachment in Korea. The small Memorial at the barracks commemorates this period. The Memorial, a design of an ex-Korea volunteer, Mr Goedschalk from Bergen op Zoom, was unveiled by Young Kyo Yom, the ambassador of South-Korea, on 12 February 1982.

The inscription on the memorial says: "This Korean stone symbolises the gratitude of Korea to the commandos of the Korps Commandotroepen that were killed in action and to those who have been trained here for the Dutch United Nations Detachment 1950-1953". This Memorial too was temporarily been placed at the Cort Heyligersbarracks in Bergen op Zoom, and is be placed back at the Engelbrecht van Nassaubarracks in July of 2002.

Next to the Memorials that are situated at the barracks there are several other Memorials that are linked with the Korps Commandotroepen and its mother units.

Commando Memorial Speanbridge, Scotland
This Memorial is very impressive; it looks out on the terrain around Achnacarry, where the Dutch commandos were trained during the war years. In 1952 the British Queen Mother unveiled the Memorial. The commemorative plate on the Memorial says: "United we conquer. In memory of the officers and men who died in the Second World War (1939-1945). This country was their training ground".

Commemorative Plaque Netherlands East Indies Memorial
The National Netherlands East Indies Memorial 1945-1962 is situated in city park Hattem at Roermond. This Memorial commemorates the fifty-six commandos and parachutist-commandos who were killed in action in the Netherlands East Indies between 1945 and 1962.

Commando Memorial, Vlissingen
In memory of all commandos who were killed in action during the liberation of Walcheren a memorial has been erected near the landing point (the mill).

Commando Memorial, Westkapelle
In memory of all commandos who were killed in action during the liberation of Walcheren several Memorials have been erected on the dike near Westkapelle.

Flood Memorial, Heijningen
During the devastating flood disaster that struck the Netherlands on 1 February 1953, commando J.E. Willemsen was killed in a rescue operation near Heijningen. His name is cited on the Memorial at the Hoge Heijningsedijk.

Commemorative Cross, Steimke (BRD)
In June 1962 in the neighbourhood of Steimke (Neder-Saksen, Germany) three commandos were killed, five were seriously injured and ten were slightly injured when a car ran into a marching platoon.
Through the agency of the Corps a Memorial Cross has been placed at the place of the accident. For reasons of poor maintenance of the Memorial Stone it is decided that the Memorial Stone will have its place on the new Engelbrecht van Nassaukazerne in 2001.
