Commando-training

Each Basic Commando Training is concluded by the ceremonial presentation of the Green Beret. On that very same day a "parents day" is organised for family and friends of successful participants. This "parents day" begins at 08.00 a.m. (after the Corps' parade), when the commandos enter the gates of the barracks. Family and friends outside the gate and all members of the Corps inside the gate welcome the new commandos. For the men, who have successfully completed the long and heavy Basic Commando Training this is a very emotional moment; hence the gate is named "gate of Tears". Beside the ceremonial presentation of the Green Beret a lot of Corps related demonstrations are given on this day. During the ceremonial presentation of the Green Beret the "General Sturges Cup", which was offered General Sturges of the Royal Marine Commando in World War II, is given to the "best man" of the training. The "best man's" name is added to the roll of honour in the all-ranks canteen. During the Basic Commando training a number of traditions are strictly observed. The participant is wearing a so-called "mutsdas"(a special commando hat) and a toggle-rope during his training just like the members of No 2 (Dutch) Troop did in 1942. There are also many other traditions and customs that are nowadays still observed all of which originate from the training of the Corps' mother units.
