Services are being held to mark the anniversary of the sinking of British ships Sir Galahad and Sir Tristram in the Falklands conflict.
Fifty-one sailors and marines died as Argentine jets targeted the unguarded ships bringing in the troops and equipment needed for the liberation of Port Stanley.
The attack, which occurred 25 years ago today, remains the British military's biggest single loss of life since the Second World War.
It was a day that produced many heroes - none more memorable than Simon Weston.
Mr Weston said: "I think we were very very lucky. Obviously some people were less lucky than others.
"It could have been so much worse."
He added: "It was quite surreal because I saw the bomb come through and it was just in front of me.
"I ran out and ran across the deck. I was aware that I was injured but I was not aware how badly injured I was.
"I have to believe it was a price worth paying."
