Liberation Day in Stanley marked by parade and wreath laying (VIDEO)

15 Jun 07

The 25th Anniversary of the Liberation of the Falkland Islands was commemorated in Stanley yesterday, Thursday 14 June 2007, with a Service of Thanksgiving in Christ Church Cathedral followed by the Liberation Day Parade and ceremony at the Liberation Monument.

The events in Stanley, which included an Act of Remembrance and the laying of wreaths, were attended by Prince Edward, the Right Honourable Adam Ingram MP, Minister for Armed Forces, His Excellency The Governor of the Falkland Islands Alan Huckle and Air Chief Marshal Sir Clive Loader, Commander in Chief Air Command, along with many guests of the Falkland Islands Government, representatives of Her Majesty's Armed Forces, veterans and local residents.

A thanksgiving service in the tiny, Christ Church Cathedral formed the first part of the commemorations. This was a quiet, private service, which opened with words from Brigadier N R Davies, the Commander British Forces South Atlantic Islands, who said:

"We remember before God those who died in the conflict to liberate the Falkland Islands. The eternal God is your refuge, and underneath are the everlasting arms."

The second part of the commemoration took place at the 1982 Liberation Monument. Watched by an audience of over 800 the parade, under the command of Major Peter Biggs, Commanding Officer of the Falkland Islands Defence Force (FIDF), and led by the band of Her Majesty's Royal Marines, Britannia Royal Naval College, marched to the monument.

A number of veterans paraded their standards on the arrival of the marching troops. During the ceremony, as a piper played a lament, official wreaths were laid on behalf of Her Majesty The Queen, laid by Prince Edward, Her Majesty’s Government, laid by Mr Ingram, and the people of the Falkland Islands, laid by His Excellency The Governor. A number of other wreaths were laid by representatives of the squadrons, regiments and units who had taken part in the conflict.

After leading the congregation in reciting the Lord's Prayer, The Reverend David Norfield, chaplain to British forces in the Falkland Islands, told those gathered in Stanley:

"We pray for those who live in the Falkland Islands and for peace and reconciliation in the South Atlantic. We remember before God and commend to his safekeeping those who died in the liberation of these islands.

"They shall not grow old as we that are left grow old, age shall not weary them nor the years condemn. At the going down of the sun and in the morning we will remember them."

Following the ceremony command of the parade was passed to Lieutenant Dave Thompson Royal Navy who marched the parade, minus the Falkland Islands Defence Force personnel, to the 1914 monument where they reformed and marched back through Stanley to exercise their Freedom of the Falkland Islands, granted to the British Forces South Atlantic Islands in 2002. To complete proceedings the Royal Air Force provided a flypast of the fixed wing and rotary air assets stationed in the Falkland Islands.
