10 January 2006 The Officers and Warrant Officers of 7 Armoured Brigade, known as 'The Desert Rats' are keeping out the winter chill on their operational tour to Iraq, by wrapping up in specially made 'Guernsey' sweaters.  It was the decision of the Commander of 7 Armoured Brigade, Brigadier Patrick Marriott, to commission a supply of the sweaters.  The traditional fisherman's 'Guernsey', knitted with oiled wool, is renowned for its warmth and durability and is therefore ideal for winter conditions in Iraq.  The military jumper is also linked back to the original item of clothing favoured by the Desert Rats in World War Two.
9 January 2006 The British Foreign Secretary, the Rt Hon Jack Straw MP visited the British Consulate at Basra Palace, during a visit to Iraq.  He was in the city meeting local officials and members of the British Consulate Staff. The Foreign Secretary also met Sir Ronnie Flanagan, HM Inspector of Constabulary (East of England and London), over lunch together with the General Officer Commanding Multi National Division (South East), Major General John Cooper. Sir Ronnie Flanagan is visiting southern Iraq to provide advice on the reform of the Iraqi Police Service.
4 January 2006 A small but crucial milestone in the handover of the defence of Iraq has been reached thanks to the Royal Navy and their US counterparts.  For the first time, Iraqi commandos ?trained by US Coastguard LEDET with RM assistance ?stopped and searched an oil tanker in the North Arabian Gulf.
31 December 2005 British troops from the 1st Battalion the Royal Regiment of Fusiliers, and Iraqi Police Service personnel saw in the New Year together on a large scale joint operation in Basra.  Direct action taken by the Iraqi Police meant that few incidents were reported on New Year's Eve and the operation was hailed as a great success.
27 December 2005 Iraqi Prime Minister Ibrahim Al Jaafari dropped in to take tea with the Commanding Officer of the Royal Scots Dragoon Guards Battlegroup, Lieutenant Colonel Ben Edwards on a trip to Al Amarah.  Mr Al Jaafari was visiting the town to announce $30 million of housing, sewage and development projects in the Maysaan area and was accompanied by Jasim Jaafar, the Minister of Housing, Ali Al Bahahli, the Minister of Agriculture and Abdul Fallah, the Minister of Education, when he made his brief stop at Camp Abu Naji.
