30 March 2005 | The first operational tour of the Middle East for state-of-the-art Merlin troop carriers from the UK took four days and covered 3,500 miles in a wide range of weather conditions across Europe and the Middle East, leaving in snow storms, passing through Mediterranean thunder storms and arriving in glorious sunshine. The Merlin detachment in Iraq is known as 1419 Flight and replaces the 1310 Flt Chinooks. It joins the Sea Kings from 845 Naval Air Squadron, Pumas operated by 1563 Flight and 661 Sqn Army Air Corps Lynx at Basrah Air Station |

Private Johnson Gideon Beharry from 1st Battalion the Princess of Wales’s Royal Regiment is the first person to receive the Victoria Cross since 1982 and the first non-posthumous recipient since 1965. |
17 March 2005 | Personnel from a North Yorkshire RAF base currently serving in Iraq are spearheading a groundbreaking new approach to the RAF's force protection role on deployed operations. Around 150 personnel from RAF Leeming’s No. 2 RAF Force Protection (FP) Wing who are deployed at Basra Air Station in the south of Iraq, are the first of four newly created force protection wings to deploy on operations since the concept was introduced in 2004. |
