Operations in Iraq: Chronology of Events

Coalition military activity is summarised below, with links to more extensive briefings where available.

Operations in Iraq

British Forces played a key role in the United States-led coalition military operations, beginning on 20 March 2003, which brought down Saddam Hussein's regime.  British Forces, along with US and other allies in the UN-mandated Multi-National Force, continue to work with the new, democratically-elected Iraqi Government to restore normality, maintain security and counter the insurgency.

5 Jun 06 The reconstruction process in Iraq has taken another step forward with the opening of Al Muthanna's new justice building. It is the first provincial justice building to open in the entire country.
30 May 06 It is with immense sadness that the Ministry of Defence has confirmed the names of two British soldiers from the Queen's Dragoon Guards killed in Iraq on 28 May 2006.
28 May 06 With deep regret the Ministry of Defence can confirm that two members of the Queen's Dragoon Guards were killed and two others suffered minor injuries in an incident which took place in Basra, Iraq, at around 2130 hrs local time.
25 May 06 A ceremony was held at RAF Brize Norton to mark the repatriation of two service personnel who were killed in a roadside bomb North of Basra City, Iraq on Saturday 13 May 2006.
24 May 06 A successful joint operation by members of the Iraqi Police Service and British soldiers resulted in a significant seizure of arms, ammunition and bomb making equipment in Basra.

Following on from his recent trip to Iraq and the formation of a new Iraqi Government, Defence Secretary Des Browne gave his first major speech to the Royal United Services Institute, London. Entitled 'Iraq: Government and Security - the Evolving Challenge' Mr Browne outlined the challenges that face us in Iraq.
23 May 06 Territorial Army soldier, Private Thomas Spaughton, was presented with a General Officer Commanding's (GOCs) Commendation for his exceptional contribution while serving with Cambrai (Force Protection) Company in Basrah, Iraq.
22 May 06 Territorial Army Twins, James and Andrew Lucas, are celebrating the end of a successful six month tour of duty in Iraq by both being promoted to Corporal on the same day.
18 May 06 A ceremony was held at RAF Brize Norton to mark the repatriation of five service personnel tragically killed in the Lynx helicopter crash on Saturday 6 May 2006 in Basra, Iraq.
18 May 06 The Defence Secretary Des Browne has been visiting British service personnel in South East Iraq for the first time since taking up his new appointment.
16 May 06 Soldiers from the 1st Battalion the Princess of Wales’s Regiment (The Tigers) celebrated their Regimental day �?Albuhera Day �?at Al Amarah in Iraq.
15 May 06 It is with deepest regret that the Ministry of Defence must confirm the deaths of Private Joseva Lewaicei, 25, and Private Adam Morris, 19, both of The 2nd Battalion, The Royal Anglian Regiment.

Keria, a four-year old Springer Spaniel, and her handler, Lance Coproral Yvonne Watson, are working hard finding illegal weapons of war in an effort to reduce the tensions that are present in Iraq.
13 May 06 It is with deep regret that the Ministry of Defence can confirm the deaths of two UK Armed Forces personnel from the 2nd Battalion the Royal Anglian Regiment as a result of a roadside bomb North of Basra City.
12 May 06 UK Military doctors have been involved in a ground breaking initiative to train Iraqi doctors in British controlled south east Iraq.  Fourteen Iraqi GPs have been learning the latest trauma techniques used in British hospitals in a series of lectures and practical sessions at the British Military Field Hospital at Shaibah Logistics Base, South East Iraq.
9 May 06 7 Armoured Brigade The Desert Rats, recently returned from operational duty in Iraq, demonstrated their new "HOME RAT" welfare system to the Armed Forces Minister, Adam Ingram, when he visited them in Hohne, Germany.
8 May 06 The Secretary of State for Defence, Des Browne, made a statement in the House of Commons about the tragic crash of a Lynx helicopter in Iraq on 6 May 2006.  Five UK personnel on board the aircraft are missing believed killed.
