On this day...... 10 September
1315: Edward Bruce's Scots army, which had devastated large swathes of Connacht, caught the Earl of Ulster's Anglo-Irish forces at Connor as he was attempting to link up with his ally Felim O'Connor, and forced a battle. Ulster's troops suffered a significant defeat and was driven back on Carrickfergus, where they were promptly besieged.
1759: British and French naval squadrons under Vice-Admiral Pocock and the Comte d'Ache respectively fought for control of the Indian seaways. The action itself proved indecisive, but the British ended the campaign the dominant naval power off India.
1813: The US naval squadron on Lake Erie defeated the British squadron.
1857: Private Divane of the 60th Rifles led loyal Indian troops in a successful attack on trenches held by mutineers. He was awarded the Victoria Cross.
1918: In Palestine, a British patrol was ambushed by Ottoman forces, suffering heavy casualties. Another Turkish force, numbering some forty, then closed in to complete the patrol's destruction. Private Needham of the Bedfordshire Regiment ran out to confront this fresh force alone, and held them off in a firefight at only about 30 yards. His action allowed the surviving members of the patrol to extricate themselves, taking all their wounded with them. Needham also escaped, to receive the Victoria Cross.
1940: There was little air activity during the day, with only occasional combat, but the Luftwaffe sent another major effort against London during the night . The day's events are recorded on the RAF's Battle of Britain website.
2000: British troops rescued soldiers held captive by the West Side Boys gang in Sierra Leone. The West Side Boys were destroyed as an organised body. One British soldier, Lance Bombardier Brad Tinnion, was sadly killed in the operation.
