How Softly Time Slipped Away

 Flames flicker
 Below a mantelpiece of memories
 Mum chases her sewing
 Through spectacles, sitting low
 On a mellowed warm expression
Dad has aged in the armchair
 His favourite pipe
Nestled in those once strong hands
 Drawn curtains
 Now dark and dull
 Still hold in the secrets
The wallpaper has lost its magic
 But still hangs, somewhat sadly
Behind the paintings, of artists dreams
 There's a familiar warm smell
 Tinged with lavender, I think!

 I still remember
 Dad would stoke the fire
And we would sit round the wireless
 Listening to the 'Home Service'
 Whilst outside
The snow laid in the moonlight
 Watched over by a snowman
With a hat, scarf and carrot nose!
 The air breathed Christmas
 Carol singers sang!
 Church bells rang!
 And excitement filled our beds
As we tried to stay awake, for Santa
 Yes, I remember!

 How softly, time slipped away!
