Note: 1980 figures are for comparison purposes. Squadron figures above include those assigned to the Joint Force Harrier and the Joint Helicopter Command - see table below

Under Joint Force Arrangements

Joint Force Harrier

2 x Royal Navy Harrier Squadrons; 2 x Royal Air Force (GR9/9A and GR7/7A)Squadrons.

Joint Helicopter Command

4 x Royal Naval helicopter squadrons; 6 x Army Aviation Regiments (including 1 x Volunteer Reserve)
7 x Royal Air Force Helicopter Squadrons (including 1 x RAuxAF Helicopter Support Squadron).

RAF Personnel (at 1 January 2006)
Trained Requirement Trained Strength Total Trained & Untrained Strength
Officers 10,150 9,510 10,510
Other Ranks 38,600 38,120 39,210
Totals 48,760 47,630 49,720

Plans were announced in July 2005 for the RAF personnel total to be reduced from 'around' 49,000 to 41,000 by 2008. The RAF will achieve the required reduction, through normal outflow, reduced recruitment and a targeted redundancy programme. Recruitment targets are therefore being reduced by some 4,000 posts (to around 6,000 in total) over the financial years 2006, 2007 and 2008. In addition a requirement for about 2,750 redundancies has been identified over the same period.
