The amphibious infantry of the Royal Navy is quite rightly acknowledged as one of the world.s elite fighting forces. The brigade can deploy anywhere in the world, at short notice, to mount an amphibious assault. Capable of operating ashore as a light brigade in any terrain or climate, they are unique in specialising mountain and cold weather operations.

The brigade comprises three commando units, combat support and combat support service support units. In transition to a war footing, the brigade would be enhanced by RM Reservists as well as TA units.

RM Units
The commando units each number approximately 700 men and are based in Taunton (40 Commando), Plymouth (42 Commando) and Arbroath (45 Commando). These units are the equivalent of light infantry battalions and each can deploy either independently or as operational group with combat support units. The Commando units are undergoing reorganisation to a new specified standard so as to be capable of exploiting the increased firepower and manoeuvrability made possible by new technologies.

New Unit structure
Command company - takes responsibility for overall battlefield command, communications and intelligence.

The logistics company - Manages all administrative and logistic activity.

Close companies - manoeuvre forces, with enhanced support.

Stand-off companies - optimised for manoeuvre support.
