Second quake shakes California

A strong earthquake struck off the coast of northern California, just hours after a moderate quake shook most of southern California.

Neither caused serious damage or injuries.

A 6.4-magnitude temblor hit about 125 miles west of Eureka.

Earlier in the day, a 4.9-magnitude quake struck east of Los Angeles, rattling homes.

Four significant quakes have hit California this week:

A magnitude-5.2 quake shook Riverside County on Sunday, and a magnitude-7.2 quake struck on Tuesday under the ocean 90 miles off northern California.

Stephanie Hanna of the US Geological Survey, said the latest quake was most likely to be an aftershock from Tuesday's event.

Earthquake hits southern California

An earthquake has struck Southern California, shaking a wide area from Los Angeles to San Diego and counties to the east.

The quake had a preliminary magnitude of 5.3 and was centred near Yucaipa in San Bernardino County, east of Los Angeles.

It was the third significant quake to hit California recently, after a magnitude-5.2 quake shook Riverside County and a magnitude-7.0 quake struck 90 miles off Northern California.

The Los Angeles Fire Department had received no reports of significant damage, spokesman Brian Humphrey said.
