Hotels around the Gulf of Mexico are braced for an impact with Hurricane Emily as tourists continue to flee from its path.

The category-four storm, which devastated the Caribbean island of Grenada on Friday, is expected to hit Mexico later.

Holidaying Britons are among the guests being moved inland from coastal resorts on the Yucatan Peninsular, where driving rain and winds of up to 155mph are expected to cause chaos.

Jyoti Howe, 42, from Greenford, Middlesex, arrived in the resort on Friday with her 16-year-old son Daniel and her sister and mother.

They have been moved from the 362-room beachside Caracol Village Hotel to a hall 10 minutes drive away.

Mrs Howe said: "We have only been allowed to take two days' clothes with us. The rest of our belongings have had to be left behind.

"We have been told the hotel will almost certainly be destroyed by the 150mph winds we are expecting."

Weather forecasters have predicted the hurricane will hover over Mexico for the next three days.
