Hi-

I am taking 1000 Metforin XR plus my doc has me on .8 lantus 1x per day.  My numbers have not changed at all since starting lantus - still have morning numbers in 160's and 2 hour post meal numbers in 190's.  If the dosage was correct wouldn't my numbers be better?

Anyone have constipation with Lantus?

There are a few questions so I will try to answer them as best I can. First, I don't get constipated from taking Lantus....might need to talk to your doc there....well I know you need to talk to him cause it sounds like the dosage of Lantus isn't correct or you might also need a fast acting insulin to cover meals. My sugars were really low when I took my lantus at night but now I half the dosage and it's working lots better.

It's more likely that the Metformin is causing the constipation.  In some people it causes diahrreah, in others constipation, and in others nothing at all.

Were you taking the Metformin before you started the Lantus?

Lantus won't change your post-meal numbers, it's a basal insulin that keeps your blood glucose down during the time you're not eating, or when you're sleeping or doing anything other than eating.  When you eat, the Metformin will make your body use the insulin it has more efficiently - which should help your meal numbers because the insulin your body is still making is more effective.

If it's not working well and you've tried everything, talk to your doctor or endo or CDE, or whoever your primary diabetes care is done through.  They will be able to narrow it down with you and get you to better numbers.

My doctor started me on 10 units of Lantus each evening and it had to increased to 40 units over  a very few months, but I thought it was working pretty well at that dosage for the past few months.  However he has changed me to the Flex Pen and I am not sure why.  I should have asked him why, because I am not sure that it is going to work at well. He started me on 40 units before meals twice a day. That seems like an awful lot to me.  I had lows with the lantus anytime I was more active or meals were irregular. I didn't ask if he wanted me to continue the lantus along with the pen but I assumed not because it would be so much.
I too am not sure the dosage is always right due to my inexperience with the pen but I find my blood sugar readings are higher

Joann, my doctor put me on 96 units of Lantus at night, plus I take 38 units of Humalog with 3x a day with meals.  The Humalog is delivered in a pen also.  That one is short acting insulin to cover your meals.  The Lantus is a long acting insulin to cover you when you are not eating.  I would think you should still be taking the Lantus unless your doctor specifically told you to stop taking it.  Usually, it takes both short and long acting insulins to keep your blood sugars within range.

right now i am taking 60 units of lantus at night. and take two reading a day but at different times. if a reading just before meals is over 150, i take two units of novoline per 50 over 150. about 90% of the time i don't have to take the novoline.

cutting back on some carbs and getting some exercise in can effect blood sugar levels.
